WD to launch 2TB drives, lose data

Dynamic disks do work, unless you are looking for *nix compatibility (tried it with mixed results). But everything from XP x64 forward (Vista, 2003, 7) supports GPT...so it isn't that big a deal.

Vista How do I make it like XP?

I am just finishing a Vista-XP upgrade as we speak. The SATA ports were in AHCI mode and not detected by the XP SP3 CD. After switching them to "compatibility mode", it worked fine. I downloaded the Intel file called "AllNetworkAdapterDrivers_13_5.zip" and installed that. That got the NIC...

Vista How do I make it like XP?

I found that going into the BIOS and setting it to "legacy" or "compatibility" mode allowed XP installs without slipstreamed drivers for all but that really annoying period when the SATA ports were on an expansion card.

Proof: Your employees are potentially your worst assets

Yup. I'm the only one with access to the whole thing. I think I'll make our offsite server a "pull" system that isn't a member of the domain and requires different credentials. That way it can pull the data it needs to backup, but no other machine can access/control it.

Proof: Your employees are potentially your worst assets

I have multi-site redundancy, and many-copy archiving, but all the systems are online and connected to the same network via VPN, Fiber, wireless, etc. A virus or malicious user with admin access could kill it all, in theory.

Proof: Your employees are potentially your worst assets

I know that RAID is not a backup, but now it seems that online backups aren't enough, either. Time to go back to a copy powered off in a fire safe.

I won't be buying any of these. SSDs are high enough capacity for my mobile needs. The only spinning-platter disks I'll be getting will be the largest for major storage.

WD to launch 2TB drives, lose data

Actually, I have 8TB of data that I would like another copy of. Working (RAID-10), backup (RAID-5), off-site (RAID-5).

An inconvienent Truth and Global warming

The very fact that we don't know what the result will be, and are changing the entire planet in a way that we can't easily reverse should be enough. It's not like we have a backup. You are arguing that the uncertainty means we can continue. I'm arguing that the uncertainty means we have to stop.

But we can regulate CO2 emissions. Just not as easily. I was looking at the 10-year schedule for our truck fleet. Based on the newly regulated schedule, 50% of our fleet gets scrapped within the next 3 years and 75% in the next 10. That is a massive, massive cost to reduce CO2. Nevertheless, it...

Recode is useful, as is Burning ROM. I don't install the rest. It is a lot like Winamp in that the basic functionality is sweet, but you can't accept a default install or it blows.

    Budget Spares

I typically don't have a problem getting people into a higher budget after something has failed. I just phrase it as "what you had obviously wasn't good enough, here is something better". Well, when XP came out, and MS wasn't entirely evil, they had a way to make most of it look like 2000. When Vista came out, and MS was entirely evil, they didn't. The only way I know to make Vista look like XP is the above method. And I don't mind Inspiron laptops; they are cheaper than...

I meant standard for the machines I build. They are already in 50% of them. The X25-M and a mid-range Core2Duo is snappier for office apps and web stuff than a Velociraptor and a Q9650.

    The Last Case

I have had a few that mounted the motherboard upside down. The main advantage was graphics card cooling; the GPU was finally on the top of the card, with plenty of space above it. I built a duct front-to-back that handled the CPU as it's own unit. It worked quite well.

Latest DPP (3.5.something) running on i7@3.91Ghz. Source images are on X25-E, destination is X25-M. As you can see, it never maxes any of the CPUs, which means the bottleneck is elsewhere. Something tells me the HDDs aren't the limitation either. If I were looking to say a program is poorly...
