Are their any BIOS updates on Dells website (or possibly the OEM for the motherboard)? Those typically state what CPUs have been added for compatibility. I would also check the FSB speed, to make sure it is the same (or at least compatible).

I was comparing Newegg prices on WD drives from the same line. 2TB for $300, 1TB for $100.

This is why I don't like this half-assed nationalization stuff. Either it is a private company and they can do whatever the hell they (and their board/investors) want, or it isn't and they can't. This whole "they can but they shouldn't" BS is just annoying.

The 8" screen on my Acer Aspire One is clearly smaller than it could be. I like the size, and the keyboard is great, I just wish they had put in a screen that used the full size of the lid (probably 10"). That would have been perfect.

I read a link somewhere that under special circumstances the performance of Intel SSDs decreased, but could be restored by doing something else. I think it was a benchmarking anomaly. I would be very interested in a high-performance 1TB SSD. That is getting to the point where my VM servers...

My system link is not entirely up to date. But I still have those MTRON SSDs sitting here. They do not have the stuttering issue. I also have an MTRON MSD-PATAA3018-032-ZIF2 that I haven't tried yet.

All my SLC drives don't have the stuttering issue.

Considering a 64-bit OS and 64-bit hardware are a requirement, I would suspect it is a special trick Adobe did to help before CS4 came out.

I like the look of the hardware, but the screens are no longer top-end, according to some recent reviews. If I had infinite money, and didn't have a lot of computing needs, I would consider a MBP. But the Thinkpad W700DS would win, every time.

Thanks for the relies, it is a shame that IBM is diluting their top-end product line. Now I can't just say "buy a ThinkPad", now I have to add "except the SL".

Since the issue is the printer, I would keep it to an external solution. I use these all the time.

Long ago UPS botched shipping a server shipment twice (the parts arrived, in the duct-taped remains of the box, rattling around, twice.). I typically tell people to buy from the ThinkPad line if they can afford it, but now it seems there is a cheapo - the ThinkPad SL line. Is it any good? At that price I can't help but think it isn't.

Hey, it did go below freezing overnight 5 times this winter ;) The heated seats are nice, you can keep the sunroof open at night. Honestly, we didn't care about it, but it was on the car that was closest to what we wanted.

I need to teach someone who is not particularly computer literate how to take the .avi from their DV camcorder, clip parts out of the video, and burn it to a DVD that will play in their regular DVD player. I was using windows movie maker for this, but it looks like it can't handle larger...

If anyone is investing a significant enough amount into spinning platters to cause a revolutionary improvement, they should be fired. I would hope that everyone in that business is redirecting their R&D into something with a future (solid state).

Yup, it was on their website (still is as a matter of fact - Stock# 5021). But it is a relatively rare car, we were looking for something with the performance goodies in blue and that was the only one in California; they are common in red or black.

Strangely enough, the unexpensive, unpowered hub doesn't throw an error, just the massive, expensive, powered one. I'll order a variety and see what I can find out.

I have a pair of Belkin powered hubs here, connected to high-speed ports on the motherboard, that seem to not support high-speed um, speeds. If I take my Kingston 2GB thumbdrive and connect it to the hub, it throws the "this device can work faster" message. If I connect the thumbdrive directly...

It really does depend on the amount of highway driving. When I was commuting from Oregon I would burn through entire tanks of gas, only using the brakes to get more. When I was in Palo Alto I lived close to the freeway and work is right off the freeway; less than 10 stops total every 150 miles...

Nope. The stock ones ran until 150k. Of course, at that point the remains shattered and fell off ;)

Cost of repairs, possibly. But I haven't had any repairs, in any of the cars, for their combined 400k mile lifetimes. Two of them have had nothing but oil changes, with the third (mine) needing new brake pads as well, at 150k.

The pool of German cars I currently maintain is small (3), and they are all VWs, but the record is pretty impressive. The one thing I do know is not to buy an American car, that even the Koreans are doing better these days.

Yup, pretty much. I had my car looked at, and it seems that it will be easily serviceable for another couple years, especially if it stops being our long-distance trip car. Long extended warranties? Any good with cars? No major loopholes?

Looks like the other serious competitor is the Audi A3. Very similar spec for just a bit more. I'll try to get a bidding war on.

I suppose the other car that is (kind of) in this category would be the RX-8; but I find it's styling questionable.

Looks like we will be getting a VW GLI with the DSG 6-speed, and pretty much everything else. I've attached the build sheet from the web. It says MSRP is just under $32k. What price should I be looking for at the dealership (paying cash - don't know if that helps).
