Upgrade from Vista to 7 32-bit, 29160 trouble

Afraid I can't help you, as there is no way I would attempt what you are doing. Any way to get your data off and do a clean install?

    Monitor is ON

I assume you've checked the power settings, and verified that the monitor sleep timer is at 20 minutes? I did have one TV connected as a monitor that didn't observe the command directly. After the signal had gone away, it started it's own internal 5 minute timer and only turned off after that. I...

    Fastest single core?

Thanks uda for the relatively concise reply ;) I'd forgotten about the i7 Turbo Boost. I suppose I could dual-boot my machine for testing, but the runtime on these projects really cries out for a dedicated system. I'm thinking of just giving it a core on a VM server and not worrying about it...

    Fastest single core?

I'm dealing with an application that is very CPU intensive, and strictly single-threaded. This app is only 32-bit, and won't run on Vista x64 or any version of 7. I just threw it on the beast (8 hyper-threaded 2.4Ghz cores, 36GB RAM, SSDs, the works) running XP x64 and it is showing once core...

    A Disk Read Error Occurred

Ugh. Perhaps it was a boot record thing, but FixMBR should have taken care of that. If you feed it to a drive imaging tool (eg Acronis) what does it say? Does it call the drive bootable? If so, I would recommend getting an image of it, formatting, and re-imaging. But others might have better...

    Something Random

Today I'll be in for just a bit. Received a counter-offer on the house which we plan to accept. As it is a short-sale, the banks still need to approve it (first and second mortgage). But we already have our financing in place.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I didn't look that big, but I'll need to take a look. I did put it in the bottom-most slot and there is still a small amount of space (few mm) below. Compared to the 5970 it is quite small ;)

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

Close. I did take good care of the car for the first 100,000 miles, with all services and oil changes as prescribed. For the next 50,000, I did oil changes as specified, but skipped on the rest. Since then (considering I got my money out of it), I decided to put my money towards a new car instead.

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

I changed it as soon as the low oil light went on. It would go on first under hard cornering. I would change within a week of the light (temporarily) going on.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Sure. I'll set up a script to start flogging it with stuff. Won't necessarily be random, but it will saturate the drive sure enough.

Windows 7 detected the drive as "LSI Adapter, SAS 3000 series, 8-port with 1068E". I thought there were only 4 cards in there? And there is an external SAS port on the card....I wonder ;)

SSDs - State of the Product?

Reminds me of last weekend at the Ritz Carlton at Northstar, Lake Tahoe. All the visitors (including me) were wowing at how great the place was, while the people who actually splashed out to stay there were complaining about the lack of heated seats on the balcony.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Bah, it requires a molex connector. I was hoping for no cables. The only thing in the box besides the drive is a quarter-sheet saying to plug it in and a bunch of foam.

Is that saying something good about German cars being able to run nearly a quarter-million miles with no maintenence other than oil changed every 20-50k? Or not good in that their electronics don't hold up to their mechanics?

    4K Sectors?

I mean that you tend to re-image your drives a lot. You would need to re-run the alignment app every time you did to avoid the performance hit.

Swapped the battery completely, and checked for tightness. I'm afraid it is part of a larger gremlin. Something to do with grounding, from what I was told. The AM radio no longer works, and FM is almost gone. I can start the car without depressing the clutch. Engine stutters when there is less...

'fraid not. Just put in another offer on a house, and I need a new car (mine tends to turn itself off at random, like on the freeway). This is what my wife wanted as a gift, so she gets it.

    Wifi router reccomendations?

At home I have a WRT350N running DD-WRT that I haven't thought about since we moved. I regularly deploy WRT54GLs running DD-WRT with minimal failures (a percent or so a year). No point for N unless you have a home file server. Your internet connection is the bottleneck anyway.

    24GB+ of RAM?

We'll find out ;) I'll leave one of the X25-Es out and replace it with an HTS541040G9SA00 (Hitachi 5400RPM 2.5" 40GB). If I can't tell the difference, the SSDs go elsewhere. But I suspect that it will make a difference.

SSDs - State of the Product?

    Right on...now I'm talking to myself ;)
  45. ddrueding

    24GB+ of RAM?

That doesn't make sense to me. The way I see it, either disk access matters or it doesn't. I'm not that sure it does (other than for backup, which should rock). But if disk access matters, surely faster disks are better? It isn't a capacity thing, as most of my VMs are under 6GB.
  46. ddrueding

    24GB+ of RAM?

Yup. The previous machine had enough CPU and disk, but nowhere near enough RAM. Taking it from 12GB to 36GB should do the trick. I'll be giving up my 2x X25-M and 2x X25-E to handle the storage.
  47. ddrueding

Not that I can think of. I'd make sure that it is running a firmware after the garbage collection was introduced, then start appreciating the speedy goodness.

My workstation hasn't had a virus since the days of BBS on 14.4. The only server application that is running on my machine directly is VMWare Server, which is running, fully up-to-date, and hosting test environments all the time anyway. SSDs - State of the Product?

That would be making an assumption about the brains ;) Honestly, considering my workstation is the backup target and backup VM server, it needs some horsepower. Building a backup server that was unused most of the time just bugged the heck out of me, so now my workstation has the cojones to run...
