i! Good to see you again (though you used to make my head spin with i, me, etc.). I'm becoming senile. It never occurred to me to try dak.com. I'll be damned. I haven't read the story yet, but will as soon as I get off SF. Live long and prosper, i.

I used to get DAK's catalog regularly (must have got my name/add from some of the audio mags I subscribed to those days). I even lived close to their business for a while. I'll never forget Drew because he's one of the best spinmeisters I have ever come across. His command of language, and...

That is a very kind and generous offer, Giant, thank you very much! May I take a raincheck for now? I've moved twice in the last 3 years and my tapes are in a box in storage and I have no idea which box! The problem is actually more a lack of the missing fizz than hiss. I have a cheapo BSR...

Thank you for the comments, O King Of Antarctica! I did get the Oly C-4000Z for $250 at Costco. The prior exposure (pun intended) to this camera, and the uniformly glowing reviews helped make the decision. It has some drawbakcs (media, mainly) but which camera doesn't? It excels in the things...

I think enough has been said; we should stick to the point and leave Merc alone otherwise. For various reasons, I have not built the new system I was planning to. What do these words mean?

You're welcome, Howell. Sangeetha is a common girls' name. It is unusual for males to have Sangeet for a name. Music is thought to be more feminine than masculine. Certain communities in North India have a habit of using female names for boys as well, leaving one wondering as to the gender of...

Opinions on Nikon Coolpix 4300 please

Would you pick the Olympus C-4000 Zoom or Nikon Coolpix 4300? I know how the Oly performs well (have helped somebody who has one). Downsides to it are that it uses Smartmedia, have to buy batteries and charger for it. Know diddly about the Nikon. But it uses CF-I, comes with a rechargeable...

Sorry. Of all the people here, I'm probably running the leanest, oldest config. Even I have speakers (turned off except when required). I assumed everybody else had speakers. And I assumed those that did would turn it on when they saw that it was Flash, and at least when they saw the sound...

Thanks again, everybody. The person that has the Oly got it as a gift. Having a couple of 128 MB cards kinda makes up for the poor capacity of Smartmedia cards. The main thing is the image quality, which is very good. For a person with little patience or for a neophyte, the default settings work...

    Fastest, most reliable Smartmedia

Thanks Blake. NRG, a camera that uses SmartMedia's got to be a little old! It's a 4MP Olympus, the C-4000. The owner saves pics as JPGs, at the default resolution (doesn't even know what a TIFF is). BTW, this camera can be had for ~$250 now, and I'm thinking of getting one myself (my first...

    Fastest, most reliable Smartmedia

I've been asked to help someone buy a higher capacity Smartmedia card. I have no experience in this area and would appreciate your advice. 1) In general, will a 64MB be faster than a 128 MB? Some people seem to indicate that larger capacity media is slower. 2) Which brand/model would have the...

Laptop Drive Showing only 32gb On A 40gb Drive

A zeroing program that starts at track 0 sector 0 should clear out Ontrack, because it will set the drive back to "factory settings". If it doesn't, then it's not a true zeroing or initializing program, because it's acting like a formatting utility, working inside the partition it sees.

    AMD CPU, RAM pricing

Are we due for a price cut on Opterons and A-64 CPUs? Anybody have any opinions on where RAM prices are headed? The Inquirer reports that AMD is changing the stepping of the A-64/3200, but the packaging on the new ones indicates that it runs at 2.0 GHz (should be 2.2 GHz). What gives?

Fushigi has covered most of the angles, but I'd like add something.
