A new XP system is terribly fragged to begin with - I don't understand why. The very first defrag of a new system takes ages.

If it's a hardware problem, why would it go away when you reinstall Windows? Also it's not clear if the level drops off and stays dropped even after rebooting until you reinstall Windows? Pretty odd problem.

Thanks jtr. I'm a partition freak (won't tell you how many I have :oops: ). The biggest partitions will be 50GB. I use Partition Magic and/or W2k to do all my disk work. W98 is only for reading and occassional writing and image creation.
