    question Mobile Phones

I am advising everyone to avoid BB due to a very shaky/questionable future. I am recommending Android-based phones, due to their pending dominance in the marketplace, and the abundance of apps. I've sworn off Nokia and Motorola phones due to reliability/stability issues. HTC seems to be doing...

End of the World As We Know It

Other than health care, what cost has grown rapidly since we had a surplus (mid-90s?). Granted, not paying for a bunch of wars was a huge chunk as well, but at least that could go away.

Now that I am not building systems for a living, I can be much more unprofessional about it. I try to sell people the rigs that I've been using. This often leaves me on my laptops until I get the cash and order another one, but that is fine. Barring that, I get them to order the parts on Newegg...

A lot of the time we won't spell out the complete name of a lens. When you do it (most recently "24 TSE II" and "24/1.4G"), I often have to hit the Google to know exactly what lens you are talking about, what bodies it is compatible with, and how much it costs.

Yeah Paugie, I often have to Google to find out which lens people are referring to. If you use Firefox, you can just double-click to highlight the word, then right-click and choose "Search Google for "xxx"". Works great ;)

The Continental ContiExtreme Contact was the OEM for my car, and it is way noisier than the Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S that I'm running at the moment. That is an old tire, and I was hoping that something better would have come along by now.

    Happy Easter

Today the weather was sketchy, but went flying anyway. Wanted to get a bunch of touch-n-gos in with a strong crosswind, and no one else was flying so I had the pattern to myself. Local restrictions keeping us above 1300ft and clouds at 1700ft, good fun.

I recently considered the Ultras for a RAID array. With the number of ports available on modern motherboards and the advanced redundancy options available, it can't be worth the money.

I think it's Linux LiveCD time. IIRC, there is also a tool that will move files on reboot, but that would be less reliable I suspect.

Yeah, I was trying my 35/2, but that was too long when the place got crowded and I had to get closer to my subjects. That is when I switched to the 17-40/4. Considering all this camera gear is paid for out of pocket, I don't see myself leaving Canon (and all my existing gear) any time soon.

I was the only authorized photographer, as I knew many of the attendees socially. Depending on who is there, how much it costs, and what it is about, it can become sensitive. That would be another benefit of a shallow DOF; some people are not to be photographed.

I have quite a few of the cheapest Thinkpad in the field. They seem to be holding up quite well, with good build quality. Not up the spec of my X201 or T410, but nice machines.

    Why must TV forsake me?

It was actually alright. I liked it, my older, geekier friends didn't. My wife (who had never seen any Star Trek before) liked it. We're now going to make our way through TOS and then some of the movies.
  42. ddrueding

    Why must TV forsake me?

If you were to show someone some Star Trek TOS episodes who had only seen the most recent movie (the prequel). What would they be? I'll be doing "The Cage" and "Where no Man has Gone Before" because they are "the beginning", but after that?

I was doing photography of an event at night. Close quarters, very poor lighting, no flash. Not candid per se, but not posed either. It is of course an absolute worst case scenario. But the current generation tech requires tolerances and QC on the cutting edge. How far back would they have to go for a run-down production line in some third-world country to be able to knock them out reliably for $25?
