Not entirely true. He wants lots of infrastructure, probably more than you do, just not of the sort you are after. I'm open to any idea, but it needs to be neutral with regards to finance and the environment.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Indeed. If they were failing quarterly it might be a problem. I've had X25-E and -Ms in servers since they were released without any failures. I've been completely pummeling some OCZ Z-Drives and RevoDrives since they came out as well. Still no failures. I suspect that people simply overestimate...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I'm just putting regular SSDs in servers and running them with good backups. Haven't had any of those go bad yet. Some are getting hit quite hard; VMs with SQL databases on them and such. You need a good backup strategy anyway, what is the big deal?

Singapore did it, and it works great. It is not about the quality of the decision, not how it is made. Democracy is only the most resilient (individual-proof?) way to get there, and only if the people are educated.

I think $10/gal gas would be a big step in the right direction. A friend who has 5 drivers in his family just put two of the 7 vehicles he owns on the market. Only 1 of the 7 gets better than 12mpg.

No idea. It isn't a service I am interested in. I like possessing things that I purchase, even if it is only digitally. The thought that I pay a buck to give their server permission to play a song that I theoretically bought to me is distasteful.

Amazon is making it more difficult to just buy an MP3 and download it. 1. No, I don't want to save it to your stupid "cloud drive" 2. No, I don't want to use your stupid downloader It is $0.99 for a <10mb download. It shouldn't be this complicated.

    FF4 and IE9

I just opened 70 youtube tabs in addition to the 9 I was already using, and firefox didn't go over 1GB in RAM. This is my office machine, so it has plenty of RAM and CPU. No crash, no lagging, just a full internet connection and a bunch of conflicting audio.

    Outlook PST Hell

The decent free e-mail client is GMail. Easiest to use, least likely to crash, most powerful, scalable, supporting huge message stores without any speed impact at all, with the best AV and SPAM filters out there. Get a GMail account, add the account you care about, done.

    Failure rate statistics

When I first went to 3TB drives, WD was the only option. I've since phased them out, and have 12 3TB Hitachi drives on the desk in front of me. I've dealt with about 30 drives in this capacity so far without a single failure. This included 6 WD internal 3 WD external, and 18 Hitachi. I can't...

The point of the talk was the observation that the default opinion one has on someone who disagrees with them follows a fairly sad pattern: 1. Ignorance: They obviously just don't have the information I do, allow me to enlighten them. 2. Stupidity: Now they have all the information, and are...

    Smoothwall on a VM

Working great thanks to everyone's help here. Install the NICs, uncheck everything except "VMWare Bridge Protocol". In VMWare workstation, go into the "Virtual Network Editor" and map the two NICs to dedicated VMNet networks in "bridged" mode. Create a VM with two NICs, each mapped to one of...

Low power box for running VM? Oxymoron?

Yeah, i3-2100 sounds about right. And depending on the load (this is a test enviroment, yeah?), 8-24GB of RAM. 12-16 would be a good start. Considering that most of the i3 boards only have 4 DIMM slots, you are looking at 4x4GB DIMMs for 16GB total. Those are DB intensive tasks, so an SSD would...

    Smoothwall on a VM

After removal but before restart it still considers it installed to it isn't on the list. After reboot you can add it. I'm now just "unchecking" everything and I'll see how that goes.

    Smoothwall on a VM

Removing it from one NIC removes it from all of them. Now I get to figure out how to add it back (nothing in the "add...service..." list). I suppose I could just statically assign garbage IPs without gateways...but that is a little too insecure for my liking.

Low power box for running VM? Oxymoron?

Considering most of your VMs won't be stressed hard (at least not all at once), CPU power is mostly irrelevant. If you plan on running many machines at once, memory is important. If these machines will be simply sitting there most of the time, storage is mostly a non-issue. So a low-powered CPU...

    Smoothwall on a VM

I'm pulling the plug on my research on this subject. ESXi server works great, and if you have a server sitting there already, it makes perfect sense. But if you were trying to run it on a workstation, I haven't found a way to expose the NICs to the VM and not to the underlying OS. I'll be...

Yup. Flash crashes on me quite regularly, though I'm not sure whether to blame Adobe or crappy site developers. GMail and Youtube never crash it, but Plantronic's site couldn't keep itself together this morning. Edit: FF4.1 is using 972M of RAM for 7 tabs at the moment.

    OCZ Talos : enterprise-class 3.5" SSD

Do you think there are any RAID vendors out there with products that properly support any SSDs out of the box? I haven't seen an "SSD" setting in any of the firmwares, and I would imagine that such a thing would be necessary to maximize performance and compatibility. This is why I get SSDs that...

    Chrysler's Pentastar 3.6L V6 engine

Just a little more would get you into a Golf Wagon, with much better fuel economy. It is less powerful, but it weighs much less and has a much better transmission, so you may actually be ahead off the lights. Not to mention better build quality, better handling, better NVH, and better resale...
