Help with safe, secure storage of video footage

I don't consider any offline storage safe. Bits degrade, parts fail. The best practice is to keep the data online and monitored. My suggestion is what I do myself: Stick enough storage in two computers that each can store a complete copy of your data. Update the backup whenever changes or...

question HDD thermal management (keeping your cool)

It looks like I'll be stranded out here in the middle of nowhere for the rest of the day, so no pictures. Sorry. All I did was buy a pair of these heatsinks, drill them so that 8 hard drives would mount between them, then suspend the whole thing for noise reduction. Runs about 8C above ambient...

No computer as yet. I'm tempted to get one with GPS to log hours, distance and speed (too lazy to do it manually). My current cadence is (by my inexperienced estimate) well above 90, and possibly above 120. I suspect that my leg muscles are indeed overly developed relative to my lungs, as it is...

Ride time is barely pushing 10 minutes at the moment. Is there any ideal crank speed I should be aiming for? I haven't even changed out of top gear yet, and several rotations per second is the norm.

question HDD thermal management (keeping your cool)

I'll put up the pictures tomorrow (when I get to my camera at work). Basically a giant heatsink that allows even the smallest amount of airflow to keep a drive cool.

    3TB HD from WD

Yup. The controller flat-out doesn't support them. If you put a 3TB drive on a controller that doesn't support them or is configured wrong, it will show up as 750GB. I ended up ditching the controller, connecting them to the onboard ports, and using windows dynamic disks. Works great.

Ride 2. Found a gap when the rain had stopped long enough for the ground to kinda dry. Set off at a more moderate pace, and was feeling remarkably good after a couple miles. Then turned around and realized why; there was a 20mph wind at my back the whole time that I now had to fight back...

I remember when the first power consumption tests for SSDs were run. The SSD laptop died much earlier because it was able to max the CPU (and therefore do more work).

    Motherboards with mSATA connectors

Integrating the power and data into the connector allows you to have a cable-free install. If someone were to include a female SATA power and data plug directly on the motherboard, that would work too.

Around here the roads are smooth, uncrowded, and the terrain is flat. I didn't have to stop once during my ride. If you don't want to ride on roads at all you can do this. The old Fort Ord military base also has large sections blocked off to motor vehicles open for cyclists. If you really want a...

Completely flat. 0.8mi. A matter of minutes, really. Next ride I'll be a bit more cautious at the start and see what happens. Even when I did exercise in the past, I never did cardio - always things that involved strength or endurance.

    netbook hard drive replacement

I think the most significant performance test for a netbook is the power-on to Firefox/Word loaded test. The SSD makes a very significant performance increase there. What else are you doing on a netbook, anyway?

Yeah. I don't like excercise. If I didn't feel like it was nearing a tipping point of "too late", or, at the very least, "much harder" to get back into shape, I wouldn't bother at all. 6'3", 220lbs. Perhaps this whole riding thing wasn't such a good idea. Went for my first ride today. I had no idea what I was doing, or how fast I should be going, so I just picked a pace my muscles could handle in top gear and started to go. No idea how fast that is, but I was keeping up with traffic, so...

    Android Tablets

I don't think Windows is the right OS for a low-powered, touch-operated device. Too CPU intensive, and fundamentally designed to require a mouse and keyboard. Your battery life will suck, and functionality will be reduced.

Oh, and the bike I have here is actually older than me (1979). Here is the original catalog. The spec sheet says the frame is 25.5 lbs, which is a bit heavier then the one I was drooling over. But that just means I get a better workout.

    Cycling

The bike is actually in amazing shape. Not only no rust, but the paint is completely intact; racing stripes and all. It doesn't look like it was used much, the tires still had the rubber knobs on them but had rotted through. As you say, the brakes don't inspire confidence, but I don't plan on...

For very small form factors or industrial installations where drives and cables aren't an option. Or, my favorite, the wall mounted computer. Combined with a PicoPSU would make simply screwing the motherboard to the underside of the desk feasible.

We have fairly capable anti-monopoly laws here, should one decide to enforce them. Of course, the best they've chosen to do was with Microsoft. Having even two players seems to be good enough for them.
