    The end-of-2003 PC Config Thread

I'll be building a computer for my wife for Christmas. The specs are tentatively MSI K7N2 Delta-L (Nforce 2) or MSI KT6-Delta LSR (KT600) XP 2500 or 2600 333MHz FSB, Barton core 2*256 MB Crucial PC3200 ATi 9600 Pro 128 MB sound is onboard the motherboard WD2000JB (just got it as her old HD is...

PATA to SATA for new HD's

oh, and no, she doesn't need a superfast drive, but since it will be her OS drive and Photoshop scratch drive I think the speed will be appreciated.

PATA to SATA for new HD's

I gave my wife the info, and she decided that the best bang for her buck (price/GB) among the better performing drives was the 200 GB Caviar Special Edition through Hypermicro. And it has a 3 year warranty. Some day we'll go SATA, but not for now I guess.

PATA to SATA for new HD's

so my wifes 75 GXP started making clicking noises tonight. I got everything off of the drive, though it took multiple forced reboots. She needs a new HD anyway (and a whole new computer, but that will wait until Xmas). So....it looks like the Hitachi 7k250 is a pretty nice drive...

Better processor than Pentium-M (Centrino) ?

like he said: "prove it" As far as notebooks go, I'm a total believer now in "less is more." Sure, my Dell 8200 with a 2.0 GHz P4-M and 512MB of RAM and 15" screen 5400 RPM HD outperforms the Dell D600 (Centrino 1.3 GHz, 256 MB RAM, 4400 RPM HD) that my school gave me, but the D600 weighs...

    [NEWS] - Mandrake 9.2 kills LG CD-ROM

ah, that makes sense. Now, who had the bright idea of making the commands the same? It will be a shame if Linux gets a bad name over this.

    iTunes for PC

anybody else playing around with iTunes on a PC? On my machine it seems to use more CPU cycles than Winamp 3, and it's not as responsive. But I do like that I can create "song lists" on the left for every folder (I sort MP3s into folders by artist). Haven't found a way to do this in Winamp.

I'd like to second B4RSK's approval of Tight VNC. At school the machine that captures our lectures has Tight VNC installed that lets me and my fellow tech geek control it remotely. Very nice for when we have review sessions that aren't officially scheduled with facilities management and we end...

    RSS News tool

good place to find feeds: http://myrss.com/ I'm in awe. This is sweet. I threw on JAMA and the New England Journal of Medicine (the later I can get full text since my university gives us their logon/password) - this is so much easier than going through my school's biomed library.

    Defrag program....does it matter?

hey all - does it really matter what program I use to defrag? I used to religiously use Norton's Speed Disk, but now I wonder if it's worth the hassle of installing it. IIRC, Norton's claim to fame was (other than the pretty moving diagram it drew) that it put frequently accessed files at the...

    Zip files....drawbacks?

Merc - are you suggesting that I use Window's compression rather than Winzip? As I was right clicking on files to compress them I saw that option, but was afraid that they might be unreadable on older Windows installations.

    Can't delete a file

sorry for the delay. I decided to just ignore the problem for a little while, and I just got around to it. When I open command.com, then killed off explorer.exe, the command window would disappear. Ug. Logged off, logged back on (which worked same as a reboot and saved time). I had two...

Sound card recommendation for 2003 Server?

ok, I'm totally out of the loop here. I remember Creative writting some really sucky software, but my old Live card seems to be running just fine in my dual Athlon MP system with both WinXP and Win2k3Server. FYI - I mostly just listen to MP3s with headphones....

    Zip files....drawbacks?

ok, so the two major drawbacks are CPU speed/time to open them (not a problem, since I rarely use these files and it seems my old and slow dual 1.2 GHz machine opens them fast enough), and risk of corruption. Can anybody elaborate on the corruption issue, especially vs. a bunch of files stored...

    Zip files....drawbacks?

Hey all - I'm running out of disk space :( So I started rumaging around, and found a ton of things that I want to keep but rarely access. Out of curiosity I tried zipping them with Winzip, and have found that some things can be incredibly compressed. My old Outlook folder was 232 MB, and is...

All-in-one printer thingies - do they work right yet?

for about a year I've been using an HP PSC750, and never had a problem with it in WinXP. I simply don't have room for a scanner/copier and a printer. Never needed a fax machine, though efax.com is very nice for receiving faxes.

OK, explorer is still at 50% CPU utilization (I'm running a dual machine). I suspect it may never fall back down to normal levels. I suspect I'll have to delete the file using the command prompt or recovery console. Hmm....in Windows how do I type in a file name with spaces?

ok, so I FTPed a file from a school server that contained a humorous 2.6 GB movie (.avi) last year's class made. Doug - dual monitors is really addictive. Way back when I went to dual 19" monitors, and I've never looked back. The lack of dual monitor support is the only reason my main machine runs Winbloze and not Linux as it's main OS. And after playing around with a 22" flatpanel, and after using my...
