    Need a good SATA+PATA card

Well, my SCSI equipment worked as it should, or at least as I thought it should so it was "easy" in my mind. I had a really fabulous professor, who is now unfortunately deceased, who would call up Dell for tech support for his home computer and explain that he was both a rocket scientist (had a...

    Need a good SATA+PATA card

After playing around with my hardware some more, I'm now thinking the problem is with my WD 2000JB. It would refuse to allow my computer to boot when hooked up as a slave off my Hitachi IDE drive on the second onboard IDE channel no matter what the jumper settings. It wouldn't allow my...

    Windows *Vista*

I've got a new "job" of sorts doing some research. Anyway, OSes came up and the question about what we'll do in regards to Vista. We're very dependent on many different types of common and specialized statistical software (SAS, SPSS, Stata, and some weird ones I never want to hear of again)...

Well, I reinstalled Ubuntu, used ext3 rather than ReiserFS, and unplugged my other HD during the install. Not sure what was the problem, but Ubuntu boots now, no prob. No bootloader, but I prefer to use my BIOS for that anyway. I'm very impressed with it overall. Stupid name, but apt-get is...

Thanks, Merc. I'll give it a shot when I get home. I use the ATi drivers to get dual head support. Out of the box I get a mirrored monitor, and I'm under the impression that I need to install the specific ATi drivers to spread my desktop across both monitors. My SuSE 10 install had dual...

installed Ubuntu, now nothing will boot

Tonight I felt like screwing with Linux, since I'm really getting tired of Windows. Tried to update my ATi driver in my SuSE install, which didn't go well, so I decided to give Ubuntu a shot. During the partitioning, I tried to set up my drives as follows: sda = WD Raptor /dev/sda1 - swap...

    Need a good SATA+PATA card

Oh, and I just found out this nice gem: when the Promise Fast Track does detect a drive, it will frequently make the drive product a lound click which freezes any operations involving that drive. Try browsing through files on a drive hooked up to the Fast Crap, and you hear a series of loud...

My MSI K8T neo has acted goofy for a long while now, being very picky about what drives gets plugged into where. I have a WD IDE HD, a Hitachi IDE HD, a WD SATA drive, a DVD reader, a DVD burner. My motherboard has the standard two onboard IDE channels, a VIA VT8237 which gives me two more...

    Windows *Vista*

When WinXP was getting ready to ship I thought seriously about shifting to Linux. It didn't happen, mostly because I'm too lazy and I wanted to run some PC games. Lesser reasons included a need to easily run Word, Excel, Access, and a plug-in for Real Player that would let me listen to...

    WinFS canceled Permanently?

    USB hub

Mubs- thanks for the recommendation. Very useful to know. Sol - you're absolutely right that the setup you described would work. The only problem is having 4-6 cables coming up onto my desk. I suppose I could twist-tie them together, but it still would be a pain to wrestle with those cords...

    Solid State HD

I gotta agree. I haven't used a chat client since I left college 4+ years ago, despite IMing being huge in college. Now that Gmail has a client built-in, I use it on occasion. Not extra software to install, simple interface, and the conversations are saved and google-able. Suits me well.

    Verizon Phone suggestions???

I thought most of their phones were hackable to get around the VZW stupidity. Perhaps the Treo 650 does as well. I'm stuck with VZW here - they have the best signal, and the most decentish rates for my level of use. Wish there was another good choice for my wife and I.
