SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

There's nothing wrong with it. Moving to SSDs was simply a much better choice. SSDs are faster, cooler, and quieter. And I can free-up a PCI slot. What is there not to like here?

Windows Home Server / Home Server OS

You've confused "doesn't compress well" with "doesn't compress at all." An amazing amount of space can be saved compressing the headers of compressed files. Particularly when you have to keep back-ups for long periods, a few gigabytes here and there adds up.

I haven't had an operating system installed to a drive lettered "C" for almost a decade. I've seen a couple of programs complain if your don't have a volume lettered C, but never a problem installing or having Windows on a drive of a different name. If you get bored, try to install a program...

AMD and Intel Officially Announce Settlement of All Disputes

The market cap of AMD is about $4.3 billion, and that's after today's ~22% run-up. That means Intel just gave AMD almost a third of its value -- in cash. That's a pretty good score in my book.

They were on Craigslist for some time. It's your loss. You can call up Goodwill of SF and see if they still have them. More than 30GB? Maybe you need a dedicated data drive. Sounds like a job for a nice SATA drive. Because they don't fail as often as the previous ones? I will note, I've...

Windows Home Server / Home Server OS

I've always consider compression to be important when long-term storage and data throughput are issues. Basic compression takes very little processing power, but can reduce the amount of data saved quite a bit.

SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

Well, you will when it fails. I'd suggest just getting one of the far more reliable 500GB/platter drives. They're cheaper, too. PS: The reason that I had to go with a 60GB SSD over a 30GB, is that I sometimes have temporary files bigger than the 4GB of free space I'd have left. I could work...

Some months ago I spoke to a friend of mine who works at Motorola about the general crapitude of their handsets. SSDs - State of the Product?

As I recall, the only difference between the Vertex and Agility series MLC drives is that the Agility is spec'ed lower so that they can use cheaper flash. Sometimes, the cheapest stuff is exactly what they're putting in the Vertex. Presumably, the schtick is the same for the SLC versions.

No, I have not attempted to use a 1TB drive on this machine before, but I don't see any complaints of such problems for my motherboard online. It's a workstation board, so I think people would have been pretty peeved if there was a generic problem with large drives.
