There's nothing wrong with it. Moving to SSDs was simply a much better choice. SSDs are faster, cooler, and quieter. And I can free-up a PCI slot. What is there not to like here?

I've always consider compression to be important when long-term storage and data throughput are issues. Basic compression takes very little processing power, but can reduce the amount of data saved quite a bit.

I've not seen any implementation using the second port on SAS drives except for a second host bus adapter. There are ways to meet similar ends without the second port.

As I recall, the only difference between the Vertex and Agility series MLC drives is that the Agility is spec'ed lower so that they can use cheaper flash. Sometimes, the cheapest stuff is exactly what they're putting in the Vertex. Presumably, the schtick is the same for the SLC versions.

No, I have not attempted to use a 1TB drive on this machine before, but I don't see any complaints of such problems for my motherboard online. It's a workstation board, so I think people would have been pretty peeved if there was a generic problem with large drives.

I bought a couple of Samsung 1TB F3s, and want to test them before using them in my NAS. They're not recognised by my BIOS. I'm 99% sure that the drives are simply DOA, as the packaging was highly inappropriate, but I want to be double sure that there's no funky incompatibilities that I don't...

I might suspect that drivers and settings would have a greater sway on "performance" than the actual piece of hardware.
