    PCI master vs. PCI slave

Oh hey, I forgot to post what happened in the end. I bought the cheap SoundBlaster PCI card, and installed it in the 5th PCI slot. The result? More excitement with a computer than I'd had in a long time. The system would boot fine, but would freeze solid after some short, random interval...

Alt+Print Screen doesn't work on my W2K test machine

Does the PrintScreen key all on its own work? I've never used Windows 2000, but on every other version of Windows (including 3.x) it worked this way: PrintScreen = Whole screen is captured Alt + PrintScreen = Only the currently active window is captured Try both of these, and paste the...

    OT: Apology to China

I'll add my thoughts about the death of the Queen Mother. I actually wound up thinking about 2 different things. It was sad. Not because I owe any royal person any allegiance, but because of what her death symbolized in my mind. She was the Queen Mother, and at one point the Queen of...

For the record, TFC includes voice communication now too ... I guess Valve added it as a component to Half-Life itself.

Is it just me, or does the site seem faster?

Actually yes, now that you mention it, it does seem to be faster. :) I notice the "GZIP compression" comment waaaay down at the bottom of the screen is showing "enabled" now (it wasn't the last time I noticed) ... could that have anything to do with it?

    OT: Apology to China

I am extremely sorry to do this (flagreen, you may actually have to moderate something!), but I noticed this story on CNN this evening: http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/04/07/china.us.spyplane.ap/index.html Everyone, please forgive me for posting something to this thread that actually relates to the...

    Orange? Blue?

Is my monitor finally dying, or has the text in the column headers changed? I'm having a really hard time focusing on them now ... that fluorescent blue color hurts! :(

What's wrong with Team Fortress Classic (via Half-Life)? There're some great cooperative opportunities there. Even just two people working together on a team can have entertaining results.

    Golden Oldie but not forgotten...

It was Dave Barry who once pointed out that rearranging the letters in "Gladys Knight and the Pips" produces "I spy naked thigh pit glands". Hope that helps.

Would everyone like to have Avatars hosted here?

Just a suggestion: GIF has been an evil proprietary format ever since Unisys decided to declare ownership of the underlying compression algorithm. You're expected to pay licensing fees to Unisys if you use them. I think it'd be great if you could host the avatars - but please prohibit the use...

Changing the name of StorageForum.net to...

I have the solution! Prof. Wizard, all you have to do is register your own domain name, and then set up a small webpage to automatically redirect you here. That way: - you type in crunchysnakebits.com (or whatever) and you arrive here - everyone else types in storageforum.net and they arrive...

    Mozilla 0.9.8

The "won't stay minimized" bug is known and is still being worked on. I think it appeared in 0.9.7 (maybe 0.9.8). The suggested workaround when it happens is to right-click on your taskbar and choose "Minimize All Windows". Hardly ideal, but at least it works.

    How quiet is your computer?

I know this sounds like a joke, but... Q: How quiet is your computer? A: My computer is soooo quiet that I need to find a quieter monitor. Hah hah. Except I'm serious! I've finally got a fully functional x-terminal set up ... and it really is so completely silent that the faint, high...

    Parallel port hard disk adapters

    > low PIO-mode transfers ... need to carry around a driver installation > floppy everywhere ... you install a SCSI driver and a device-specific > drive That's ok. My 5 year-old parallel port Zip drive has given me a lot experience - and patience - in that area. I think I should elaborate on...

    Parallel port hard disk adapters

Has anyone seen such a thing? Basically I'm looking for an empty box with a parallel port adapter outside, and an IDE connector insided. I honestly thought such things had become fairly abundant recently (haven't I seen ads saying things like, "don't throw your old HDD out, turned it into a...

    Fastest platform to compute Genome@home?

I'm just kidding you. :-) Perhaps Buck can write a letter to Cray and ask if it's worth upgrading from his cherished 386 to an SX6 for the sake of improved G@h and RC5 stats?

    Fastest platform to compute Genome@home?

MS - SMT means mo' money!

English is so weird. More than a decade ago I went on an exchange program and spent a summer with a family in France. I remember the mother asking me a few questions about a particular English verb (I can't remember which one now). I immediately opened my mouth to offer an explanation, and...

    An open letter to Hewlett-Packard

Sorry to hear about your HP troubles, Tannin. Back when I had a job (*sniff*) I used to look forward to the opportunity to call Hewlett-Packard just because there was always the possibility the call would degenerate into something circus-like. In many ways calling HP for printer support was...

    PCI master vs. PCI slave

Hah. That means you're probably one of the people in the old SR forums that have contributed to my fear of the SoundBlaster Live. Honestly, after noting so many complaints about it in the old SR forums, I have found myself opening the drawer that contains the card very slowly, and I cringe...

    PCI master vs. PCI slave

Thanks everyone. I guess I will just have to try it to be certain. I still wish I fully understood the difference. It's weird because so many cards seem to say "supports bus mastering," implying that they're doing a favor for you somehow. Yet when you look at it from the perspective of the...

    PCI master vs. PCI slave

Hi, Can someone explain the difference between "master" and "slave" with respect to the PCI bus? I've tried to find an answer on the web, but I can only find passing references, with most saying something like, "in the old days, with some motherboards you had to worry about whether you had a...
