    Windows 10

No idea really... A quick Google found me this: http://www.ghacks.net/2015/08/14/comparison-of-windows-10-privacy-tools/ I didn't realize there were so many.

    Windows 10

I've put 10 on a few PCs. Using Classic Shell to lose the goofy start menu & DoNoSpy10 to disable the stuff MS doesn't give you controls for during installation I don't have a ton of concern. It's fast, and the new file copy progress bar, as well as the trick task manager are way better than...

question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

The Natex ones (4 matching DIMMs) are supposed to arrive today. I guess I could get another 4 DIMMs from Natex and use those 8 matching DIMMs in the S2600CP2J and keep 4 of the 7 good VLP DIMMs for my X9SRA.

question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

The 8th DIMM arrived today. But of course it doesn't work. The S2600CP2J flags it as bad and lights up an orange LED next to whatever slot it is in. The X9SRA won't boot with it. *sigh* Now I don't know what to do. I don't really want to wait another 2 weeks shipping it back and getting...

I will use it at home. It was pretty much just an impulse buy. I didn't really do any research. The fancy RGB LEDs lured me in.

Stories like this are why I quit buying Zotac hardware (not that I ever bought much of it). They don't even list old products on their website anymore so you can download drivers, manuals, and the like. You could always bake it Linus style.

    4k TVs and Monitors

DeltaE is a measure of perceptual color accuracy. It has nothing to do with color space or uniformity. sRGB is a fine color space for most computer use because that's what all software assumes you're using. A WGG monitor is a big pain to use unless it has multiple HW color space presets. You...

I opened it today. It has a HUH728080ALE601 in it just like the one PC Perspective bought.

question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

One last benchmark. My IOmeter pattern that mimics ATTO. It reads and writes for 330 second for each test which translates to about 66gB of data at 200MB/sec.

question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

No, it's not a SMR drive. It should be a relabeled HGST Helium Ultrastar He8 inside the shell.

question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

The WD My Book 8TB I got from BB does this over USB 3.0. AFAIK, it has to be a 7200 RPM drive to bench like this. I'll open it up later after I "beat" on it a bit.

question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

There are other reports of people getting a WD80EZZX in their 8TB My Book units. Which according to the information out there is a HGST He8 running at 5400RPM instead of 7200RPM. I haven't made it to Best Buy to pick up my drive yet. I'm stuck at work waiting for a DHL delivery. Either drive...

question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

The same as Amazon. $249.99 + tax. I paid more for some of the 6TB Enterprise Toshibas I bought (they lowered the price partway through my buying). Of course the 6TB Toshibas do have a 5 year warranty. This effectively won't have one. Had I not built my big array already I'd be tempted to...

question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

It looks like natex did ship my RAM yesterday. There is a package in the hands of FedEx. I decided to roll the dice and have one ready for pick-up at the closest BB with one. One is enough since I'm not looking to make another big RAID array with a bunch of drives... Just a large drive to...

    Monoprice SlimRun Ethernet cables

Anyone tried these? I picked up a five pack of the 3', 7', 10', and 14' CAT6A cables last week and got them today. I'm impressed by the thinness and flexibility of them. I don't know why this sort of product is only just now coming on the market. I plan to use them to replace the standard...

question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

I haven't put the dual processor E5-2670 into the basement yet. It has a clean install of Windows 10 on it now. I need to get AVIsynth and other relevant software on it so I can see how it works with what I built it for. I haven't noticed the noise from my new NAS (in the basement) on the...

question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

My other TY-147A fan ran even slower. Tuns out what I thought were 2 more TY-147A fans were actually TY-140 fans. Same basic fan with less PWM adjustable RPM range and a different bearing. So it spins about 2x as fast (~565RPM) at idle which is just fine. I popped it on, closed up the case...

question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

I initiated a return for the other 3 DIMMs of RAM, and the seller accepted. I ordered four of the $16 8gB Hynix PC3-12800R sticks natex.us is selling. I guess I will be fan swapping tonight to see if I can find one that runs a little faster. I bought a small inexpensive DC/DC step-up...

    UnRAID Server Build

Do you actually wear a ground strap and work on an ESD mat? I don't. I do keep the system plugged, but switch off at the power supply. question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

I got a beta / test BIOS from Supermicro that lets the fans run down to 300RPM instead of freaking out at 700RPM. It requires a drop below 300RPM to go full throttle. Unfortunately, the fan on my CPU, a Thermalright TY-147A, runs around 300-320RPM at idle, and will intermittently drop below...

question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

Sorry to hear about your continued troubles. Try to keep the power supply though. :mrgrn: I did a clean Windows 10 install tonight on mine. I also messed around to see if I could stop the fan stupidity at power on. That didn't go anywhere. It looks like the Emulex Pilot 3 drivers tell the...

I just wanted to post that this Server/NAS rocks! :D Editing the commercials from my recording OTA HDTV is awesome. It reads and opens a recording in maybe 15 seconds tops from the 1TB Samsung 850 EVO. I had a SSD for my recordings in the old server, but it wasn't like this. The old system...

question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

The other seller says they shipped me out an identical DIMM to the one I returned and gave me a tracking number that doesn't work yet. I guess I will buy 4 of these from Natex for the other machine. I did the Windows 10 upgrade to the S2600CP2J yesterday. I used the Server 2012 graphics...

I'm pretty sure if you close it you can't reopen it or open another, but I'm not 100% sure. Either way you should end up with a nice collection of spare parts. :p I've been going back and forth with Supermicro about my fan pumping issue on the LGA 2011 workstation . I do have the parts to...

So a Norco 4U chassis with 12 HDDs in it is quite heavy. I can only imagine what one with 24 HDDs is like. It draws around 200W sitting there. If I'm recalling correctly the power draw got up a little over 400W when it powers on (according to my P3 Killawatt). I think I have the RAID card...

    10 gig Ethernet

I've seen people post screenshots of >1GB/sec transfers so it's definitely possible. It seems to work better with two Windows boxes, and not if one of them is Linux. Well, the answer is yes. I now have an Intel X520-DA1 in one Windows XP x64 system and a Mellanox ConnectX-3 in a Windows 10 system with 3m of Cisco Twinax / DAC connecting them. So you can change the port the computer listens for RDP on in Windows 10, but you can't change the rules in the firewall for RDP to change the port. You have to create new rules... I don't think this is new to Windows 10, but if you went to the trouble to change the port for RDP in the...

I put the Intel X520-DA1 card in the XP x64 system, and the Mellanox ConnnectX-3 is in the new "server"/NAS. I used a 3m Cisco SPF+ DAC to connect them. I've started the data copy. It's not going as fast I'd hoped. XP x64's SMB and TCP/IP stack don't seem up to handling 10GbE all that well...
