    98SE setup BSOD?

No. I don't have any such utilities at my disposal, Memtest crashes every time I try and that's all I know how to use. In any case, doing a repair job with the install media fixed the reboot loop. I was also LIED TO :arge: by the data sheet for this particular machine. It states the machine has...

    98SE setup BSOD?

Arrrgh! So I finally got my stuff installed onto it today. It's been perfectly reliable, if a little slow because of its modest stature. I decide to run CHKDSK on the next bootup to see if there's anything wrong with the drive that can be detected to see if I wasted my time again or not. It...

    98SE setup BSOD?

Took it down to two 64MB modules, 2k installs beautifully now. Looks like I need to raid the high school's parts bin for some 128MB modules that they told me they wouldn't miss... again.

    98SE setup BSOD?

XP crashes before getting to the formatting stage with an IRQL_NOT_LESS_EQUAL message. Online research suggests that's shorthand for it doesn't have valid drivers for my hardware, or my RAM is bad. Still scratching my head on Memtest. When I burn it to CD it crashes on the Pentium II. AAAAAnd I...

    98SE setup BSOD?

So I've got a new headscratcher for you. I finally got Win2k to format the hard drive, but when it gets to the Ds in the file copy list, it BSODs with the error name PFN_LIST_CORRUPT. I'm taking this to mean that I have bad media from what I could find online, so I made another copy. This one...

Today my aunt picked up a computer at a yard sale for me for about ten dollars. It refused to POST. All it needed was different RAM. I now have a Phenom II x4 945 in place of my Athlon II x4 630. My Athlon II x4 630 has in turn been given to my Dad, who has desperately needed a more reliable...

    98SE setup BSOD?

Thanks for the pointers, guys. Going through the motions of trying to reinstall win98 now, maybe it will work from freshly-burned media. Yes, I had an ISO. Yes, I have a genuine license, so there's no reason to be concerned. For the record, I know more than I ever will need to about older...

    98SE setup BSOD?

I think my selection of hard drives are just bad. I can't get them to work in the Pentium 4 either. I'll see about maybe grabbing a 10 GB drive off of ebay or something. Might also just grab a CF adapter and use a 16GB CF card.

    98SE setup BSOD?

It's (I think) an in-house IBM mobo with a 440BX chipset. FAT32 cuts off at 2TB, and an updated version of FDISK (which I have) can partition more than 64GB. It sees the 20GB drive for what it is alright but thinks the 80GB is 15GB in BIOS and 10GB through FDISK (that curiously formats out to...

    98SE setup BSOD?

On my recently-acquired Pentium II, I'm currently trying to set up Windows 98SE. :puke-l: The first phase of setup executes flawlessly, and then it boots from the hard drive. It BSOD's at about 46% when trying to initialize it's driver database, with an exception 0E at 0028:C0008997 in VxD ---...

    Windows 10

In my experience things that require 3D acceleration, unless they're very simple and/or from the late 90's, simply run terribly under virtualization. I don't know what was going on, I may just not have had virtualization extensions active on my CPU of the time.

    Goodbye Firefox

Oh balls. Hopefully the addons I use get extension-ified before the deadline. Recently found a couple of new addons that make FF especially cool, but these implement features Vivaldi has natively right now. I'm intending to migrate completely to Vivaldi once we get a full release. Actually, I...

    What distro and why?

Got back onto Arch. Running XFCE again, decided I didn't want to bother with installing MATE programs when the ones bundled with XFCE fufill their intended function and I didn't have to hunt them down to install them. Even got GPU folding working right off the bat! Thanks for the advice...

    What distro and why?

I personally loved Arch Linux. Well, love. I can't say that I don't, it's delightfully minimalistic and I have a bit of a thing for minimalist operating environments. I didn't consider it this time around mostly because I simply didn't think of it (and tried to justify my laziness afterward)...

    What distro and why?

Ubuntu MATE seems a little more fully featured for a marginal requirements increase than Xubuntu, otherwise that's no doubt what I'd be on myself. XFCE is simply superb, but I found that I preferred several MATE applications to their suggested XFCE counterparts and found that the functionality...

    What distro and why?

For the Linux nerds among us, what distro are you using, and why do you feel that it was the best choice? I'm using Ubuntu MATE (though I have been known to use Arch and variants of Debian/Ubuntu/Mint in the past) because with an Ubuntu base things didn't take hours upon hours just to set up on...

SSDs - State of the Product?

While I admit I have no real need for these high-density storage mediums with my current consumption (honestly, though I'd complain about the speed a single 500GB hard drive would meet my needs admirably) it is rather exciting to see this stuff being made cheaper (well, less astronomically...

I don't actually have a lot to complain about, tbh. It's reasonably priced, decent enough in the speed dept., my ping times are good enough for online gaming, and there's no data cap we can realistically hit.
