    Blu-Ray adopting two new codecs

Pretty expensive backup for the time being! (just for the media alone)

    Windows shortcuts

Cheers. It's a handy function, I wonder why it's not so obvious to perform anymore.

    Windows shortcuts

Ok, this should be an easy little question. Back in the day, with windows 95 shortcuts, you could put a question mark at the end of the target path, so that when executed, the shortcut would pop up a little query box asking for arguments to be passed to the .exe. How do I do it in W2k/XP?

    BIOS Issues...

What is the system, and what are the changed circumstances? My mate just bought a P4C800 and a prescott chip. The thing wouldn't POST. It had to be booted with a P4c CPU and be flashed with the latest BIOS before we could put the prescott in. That was a pest to figure out.

    Strange creature

Can someone tell me what this creature is that I have for an avatar? I'm sure I've seen him on a video clip for an old song, and I've always wanted to hear the song again, but I never have heard it since. PS. I have gmail invites if you need them.

Copying from one location to another

In a W2K machine, if I am copying (not moving) a file from, and to, the same physical and logical drive, then what is the process that the data goes through. Does data need to travel on the bus? Or does a drive usually perform this function internally? I guess I could just see what perfmon has...

    Blu-Ray adopting two new codecs

Whats wrong with disc caddys? I remember having a CD-ROM that required caddys for CDs, and it was great. Now all I have are a pile of CDs everywhere getting scratched to death. I'm not responsible enough to have BluRay discs without caddys! I said it a long time ago, DVDs need to be stored in...

    NCQ

    Good point Mercutio.

    NCQ

Just how significant is this? Let me just rehash what I think it does. NCQ can queue instructions for the next few reads/writes, and can make an informed decision about which is the smarter instruction to fulfill first, based on the rotational position of the heads. Thats all good and well in a...

    300MB SATA

I guess it all comes down to the effect a HDD cache size increase has on the cache hit-ratio. Do we see much locality occur in secondary data transfers? I don't know. I understand that a nice sized buffer will smooth out writing to an HDD, keeping processes in the ready state more often. So...

    300MB SATA

I often hear people at school having a cry about how 300MB SATA will have zero effect on a computers performance. I understand that the bus is not the bottleneck, but with HDDs with larger cache, like 16MB, wouldn't there be a reasonable cache-hit ratio? If so, then peek bus-throughput is not...
