    Home NAS

OK, long time no update, but perhaps some useful information (I hope). Turn key NAS devices are appliances—like washing machines. NAS gives you a bit more without the overhead (learning curve) of a full-blown server OS. But there is a difference between an appliance device and FreeNAS (or...

    Dead SCSI Drive

I think I bought it circa 2003 or so, and it's been running 24/7 just about ever since. And it's still noticeably quicker in a lot of things than today's SATA best. The good news is that I used a tool on the UBCD 5.03 CD called VIVARD. It's 0.4 but it worked. It found the dud sectors and...

    Dead SCSI Drive

My Maxtor Atlas II 15K SCSI drive finally bit the dust (I think). Yesterday, I got a lot of write errors while running. When I attempted to reboot, I got a BSOD Stop Error 0x00000024. Nothing seems to fix this. This happens attempting to boot Windows XP in normal and safe mode. If you...

    Quiet server

Socket 1156 is going to be supplanted by Socket 1155 in about 1 month (Jan 5), so I'm not sure how much longevity you'll get out 1156 chips/mobos. Handy, thanks for the info on VMWare and NICs., but it's probably worth noting that this would apply to Intel (and I assume Broadcom) NIC's but not...

    Quiet server

Another + for RAID 10 over RAID 5. Sure, you get more usable disk from RAID 5, but if you've ever had to put up with accessing a RAID 5 share when a disk has failed, you'll know that the thing is practically unusable while the array rebuilds. Disk is cheap, multiple workers sitting around...

Storage size: If the people are using OpenOffice or MS Office 2007 +, then document storage won't be a problem If they are using Office 2003 or earlier, I've seen many 20MB+ single files. In this case, storage volume could be an issue. Online extension. Why not Freenas or OpenFiler? Use...

I was running an X6 @ 3.4GHz and two (Intel) Q9550s @ 3.4GHz. On some units, the X6 was only slightly better than the Intel's. On others, you got maybe up to 50% better. The downside is that the Intel Core2Quads are more efficient power wise. I cannot comment on how they stack up versus...

    Windows 7 nonsense

I installed Windows 7 Home Premium on a K6-III 400 with 768MB & NVIDIA GeForce 4MX 440 just for shits and giggles. Was it usable? Sort of--the odd pause for a few seconds. It wasn't painful to load apps, but I didn't load a lot of things simultaneously. No where near as painful as Vista on a...

//rant on I don't know how people have been snowed by Gigabyte. Long after the S478/S462 motherboards were all dying from bad caps--and people knew what the problem was, Gigabyte was shipping S754 motherboards with dodgy caps. Therefore Gigabyte knowingly shipped these products. I've had...

I think Tech Report do a better graph, perf/$$, because the xbit graph doesn't tell you how the relative cpus perform. Frequency is interesting if you run single thread apps, but fall down mightily for threaded apps. http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/18799/15

    O&O Defrag with TRIM

My understanding is that SSDs are addressed similarly to memory (row + column), so what magik is happening in the MFT is interesting. Given that, it doesn't matter if files are fragmented in an SSD as the the access penalty (and I'm not sure that there is one) is miniscule compared to the...

Funny y'all should mention this. SanDisk Ultra and Extreme SD/SDHC cards comfortably exceed their rated class speeds. Some of their normal SD card range does as well, but some do not, or the packaging omits to mention that it does anyway. PQI is another that sells 150X (CD ROM speed) cards...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Almost pulled the trigger on a Mushkin SandForce 60GB SSD today. Given the capacity increases in that Intel roadmap, I'm glad I didn't. It will make 160GB drives ~ $$$ of todays 50-64GB drives. That would be a good thing.

What's the verdict on Windows 7?

I too see that on a 3 yr old Dell Inspiron 6400. My current thinking is that it's a trackpad issue. The trackpad seems to be more sensitive with the default Windows 7 drivers. Just having my wrist pressing on the palm rest immediately to the side seems to make the cursor jump.
