    FreeNAS

    I've been tinkering with running FreeNAS in a VM for a while - ESXi 5. But I cannot get the throuput I want. As a standalone Athlon 64 2.4GHz (754), 1GB DDR 400, NVIDIA Gigabit NIC, Samsung 2TB 5400rpm drive, I get 40+ MB/s writes and 80+ MB/s reads. On either and Athlon X2 4000+ (2.1GHz) 3GB...

In every case I've experienced that symptom - PC may, or may not turn on when the power button is pushed - the culprit has been the power supply.

    Best movie you've seen

Saw John Carter with the kids. It held my attention for the 2:12 runtime, and held my kids attention, despite being 30~40 minutes longer that what they are used to. It's a better movie than a lot of the reviews I've read. But it's still not great. I'm disappointed that Disney murdered the...

Ooohhhh. Delta Black label fans, circa the birth of overclocking. I still have one somewhere. Plug it in and it's a little hovercraft. A little, screamingly, annoyingly, loud hovercraft...

    Low powered computer thread

I saw a couple of reviews (Xbit, TechReport I think) on low power rigs where using a "brick" power supply - like a notebook external adapter I assume - makes an appreciable difference to Intel T series or AMD Brazos platforms. IIRC, the difference was 2/3rds or less of the power draw at...

    Beverages

Australian and Pilsner. I'm thinking oxymoron. My favourite pilsner was Schwelmer Pils (which I believe is German). Dan Murphy's used to stock it but no longer. Most Australian pilsners taste too "lagerish" compared to Pils. Tried Cooper's 62 pilsner and wasn't impressed at all. But I agree...

    Learning how to use FreeBSD

Check your HDD activity light. I bet it's flashing like mad. It's probably the slow drive holding things up. Funny you should mention FreeBSD. I'm going through my own learning curve with it because FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD. And I want to install FreeNAS in an ESXi 5 VM. But I cannot...

In case anyone missed it, treat the Metro screen as you would the run command under XP or the search box under Visa/7. The metro screen is one big run command :) Works well Also, If you go to the desktop (via the Metro icon) you can then open up explorer and there is a control panel icon in...

    FreeNAS

Been using 0.7 for years. CIFS/SMB needed a little work to get good performance out of, but I get 80+ MB/s (big B not little b) on large files, which is probably getting close to saturating a GigE network link. For the last twelve months or so, this shouldn't be an issue either - the default...

PC Gaming = World of Suck

My son bought me Duke for my birthday. I just installed it. Yeah it's old skool, yeah it doesn't have the realism, or accuracy of MW3 or BF3. It doesn't require a 990X overclocked to 4.5GHz and a Radeon 6990 to play at medium settings. It's cartoonish. And has a lot of toilet humour. But...

I laughed at the Sandforce haters holding up Crucial & Intel as the bastions of reliability. They all have bugs. SSD's, by the nature of the controllers will be buggier than mechanical for some time to come.

New Zalman cooler proves to be very effective.

I used Zalman 7000/9500/9799 NT coolers for quite a while because they (at the time) good for the price. But time moved on and better/cheaper products arrived. My last two coolers were Noctua 12cm jobbies (not the über ridiculous 14cm ones). The areas where Zalman fell down were the fan...

I'm about to build a VMWare box for hosting 2 VM's. I was going to use an Intel G620 Pentium, instead of an Athlon. Then I heard that the i3 xxxxT processors were very power efficient. Cool! Then I found out that low end Intel chips don't support the Intel virtualisation extensions, and that...

Shaving solutions, or, what do Gilette and all those companies do with all their $?

My current thinking is that this is more a sign of blunt blades than bugs lurking in the cartridge. The blunt blade pulls at the hair and nips the skin near the base, allowing bacteria into the follicle. When I suffer from the same, a fresh cartridge usually makes the problem go away. I...

Shaving solutions, or, what do Gilette and all those companies do with all their $?

I don't get this multiple blade thing. I have a heavy beard. Shave every day, twice if I want to go out out night. Because of that, multiple blades clog on my beard with a lot canned shaving gels. Foams (old skool!) work better for me. And so does sorbolene cream in a pump pack (very runny)...
