Hey a real question! Cool!
In general, Collector, you need to format MFM drives via the BIOS on your controller card. It's getting to be a long, long time ago, and my memory has faded, but you normally do that by using DEBUG to jump to the appropriate entry point. Which address? Depends on the controler, and they were all different. You just had to remember the address for each one.
Some rather snazzy controller cards had a different and easier method, but I can't remember what it was now! I do remember thinking how much easier it was.
Remember that, generally speaking, you need to do the format on the same controller card you plan to use the drive with — i.e., it is pointless doing the format on a DTC controler if the Kaypro comes equipped with a Zebec. So your first step is to identify the controller card on the Kaypro. Armed with that information, we can start trying to track the remainder of the proceedure down.
