I have a 40GB Quantum Fireball. And as a lot of the others have done, mine has gone up in flames, quite literally. A loud pop, followed by a puff of smoke, and the fireball was no more. This was a little while ago. I read up on some forums, and this happened to heaps of people, I'm sure you guys know all about the motor controller chip and it's problems with the friction caused by the grease used on the spindle.

I havn't missed any of the data so far, but there might be a bit in there. Does data recovery sound possible without handing the drive over to a pro. I considered attempting a replace of the controller board of the hard disk, but seeing as the problem happened due to the grease hitting a certain friction amount, perhaps it might happen the instant I power it back up.

What have other people done with these pieces of crap?
