Wifi APs - what's your preference these days?

I wouldn't suggest running your router in a VM unless you're cool with your Internet access going down every time the host freezes or reboots. If you choose to go virtual, anyway, you will want to pass it the NICs and storage that it will be using. Four-port, fanless mini PCs are pretty easy...

I picked up a 3600 non-X. I'm running it stock on a B450 board with the stock cooler. It runs 100% load all day at 3.8GHz and pretty quiet. Intel has work to do.

    Ryzen

TDP is, unfortunately, a load of baloney. Intel's seem more honest but considerably more useless; their TDPs are basically what the cooling solution needs to dissipate for the chip to only hit the base clock. AMD's TDPs are supposedly what the cooling solution needs to dissipate for the...

I'm guessing that you're dead already, then. You may want to check if Gmail will fetch the mail for you. I haven't set it to up with any other accounts since the days of POP, so I don't know what it supports now.

Well, Intel isn't doing it with Ice Lake, either. Threadripper 1000 and 2000 chips have a much more compelling price/performance.

    OAuth

So, what's the problem with "too many old ATT and Verixons emails?"
  27. sechs

    Ryzen

I get the (unfounded) feeling that Threadripper will get better chiplets. The AM4 parts with two chiplets have a good one and a not as good one. I think that Intel has spun out on HEDT. All they can do is push clocks at 14nm and hope that their 10nm chips can catch up. I don't think that...

The new iPhones are often cited. Their chip is also produced by TSMC on 7nm. Between Apple and AMD, that's a lot of silicon.
  30. sechs

    OAuth

Thunderbird does support OAuth, but I've only used it in connection with Gmail. I wouldn't put it past AT&T to use something non-standard or out of date which isn't compatible, however.
  31. sechs

    Ryzen

The same chiplets are used in Ryzen, Threadripper, and Epyc. I think that demand is just much, much higher than expected. Considering TSMC's recent announcement concerning lead times on new chips, AMD could be in a crunch.

    Ryzen

AMD and Intel are more or less at the same IPC. The only difference is that Intel costs more and clocks higher. And, if number of cores matter, AMD has more for less $$. Newer processors from both companies come with built-in mitigations for the those flaws. But they keep finding new ones in...

Between the power outage in Japan and the looming Japan-Korea trade war, DRAM and NAND prices are going to go up. And the US-China trade war doesn't make anything cheaper. It may be a wash waiting for some prices to go down while others go up.

    Ryzen

Ditch the cooler. Stock is fine and you can put that money elsewhere. Like faster memory. Ryzen likes that. If you're willing to go used, video cards and spinning disks are pretty cheap.

  40. sechs

    Ryzen

You'll have to take that up with the motherboard manufacturers. While there is some additional cost expected due to the chipset and implementing PCIe 4.0, I think that, at the high-end, there's a bit of raising prices because they think that people will pay. And it does seem like they are...

The 12- and 16- core models, at least, were more HEDT than workstation. Those core counts are now just "desktop."
  43. sechs

    Ryzen

It seems clear that the new Threadripper chips will be squarely aimed at workstations. Translation: They won't be cheap.
  44. sechs

    Ryzen

Unless you need the additional PCIe lanes or memory bandwidth/amount, the AM4 parts make a lot more sense. A 3900x on an x470 board looks to perform pretty decent. Only you can determine whether it'll be worth the extra cost for the four more cores of the 3950x.

Have you set Windows to pause updates during your job? Granted, that only works once a month. If you're on Pro, you should be able to set updates to be delayed for 30 days. If you check before starting, you should, theoretically, be good for a month. As a last resort, you can set your...

    Nvidia RTX 2080 & 2080Ti announcement

    Windows 10 activation hardware changes

This sounds like some tin hat stuff, not "common knowledge."
