I'm sure those are fine for lampshapes, but I would not want to use the 12-point light in a non-diffused application such as the toilet.

    USB Drive Utilities

Apparently the HD manufacturer's utilites are designed for internal drives. Other than some basic tests that can be done with HDDScan, what do you suggest for confirming defective USB 3.0 external drives?

I thougth the Samsung was actually a bit more expensive, but that was a while ago. Let us know how it performs or if there are any issues.

Yes, that is it. I like the Intel because it has the toolkit for optimization.

    question Good SATA card?

Correct. Most of the cheap cards will work for single drives, but I would not use them for RAID without extensive testing first.

Hitachi starts shipping 4TB drives in Japan

No, it was a 27-month project with about 6 weeks of shooting altogether. There will probably be about 350 useful images from that.

    question Good SATA card?

Some of the SIL-based cards are not supported correctly by the modern BIOS and drivers. I have a pile of various cards and after the XP era they are a crapshoot in late model systems.

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

I don't know the exact details, but it is one of the dimmer (40W replacement) lamps. It is just the point that the same lights in the toilet don't last nearly as long when typically illuminated for only a few minutes each time. Now I have three types of LEDs in several rooms for comparisons...

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

It looks like 12 small emitters spaced around the perimeter. Won't that produce a worse illumination pattern than the lamps with a small number of large phosphor areas?

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

Mine don't seem o last that long. The ones in the dining fixture last about five years and are on about 80-100 hours per week. The lights in the west toilet are on around a tenth of that time, but cycled frequently. Those lights only last about two years. There is one light on 24/7 that...

    Drive drops?

I run a full low level drive test on each drive before using them with data. However, I find that most of the time drives drop out there is a issue with the power supply/connectors or a defective board.

8 drives in 1 system - what's the cheapest way?

I'm not sure that benchmark is the right term. Presumably the OP wants to ensure used drives are in good shape before flogging them on auction and there are many to be tested.
