Um, no. Disabling the fan and not handling the cooling some other way would cause them to run 30-ish above ambient. Still in many peoples comfort zones depending on what ambient is. Or just silence the alarm and put in a quieter fan.

There is a jumper to disable the fan, or allow a fan swap. If you don't use the jumper the alarm will be very annoying.

Don't bother drilling holes, double-sided poster tape does a great job with 2.5" drives. I've been doing it for years without issue. I also wouldn't fool around with 4 separate consumer-grade hotswap bays. Just get one of these and don't worry about it anymore. It also ups your max drive count...

I'll second the 'dude, and also recommend against a CF->IDE in this instance. The headache I'm dealing with today revolves around corrupted filesystems on CF cards after unclean reboots. It seems to be worse and more frequent than with regular drives. I'd use a 2.5" drive for the power savings...

Just for grins I dropped a PCIe 1x 4350 in next to my 5870. I had to re-install the drivers (didn't have to with nVidia) but you do get 4 in XP x64

Yup. When I went from a fast AMD system to a C2D I was blown away. There is a snappiness there that isn't elsewhere. And the boards/drivers are excellent these days. The only things I buy are Gigabyte boards with Intel chipsets and Intel boards with Intel chipsets.

My main reason for wanting a faster CPU was for single-threaded app performance. It's difficult to max out all the cores for very long, but maxing out one is easy. The reason for getting the EE is that you can't turn up the FSB much with that much RAM, it just doesn't like it.

Yup. You don't need identical cards, either. I've even done ATI/nVidia combos...but that is the devil's work. Keep in mind that you can also have a pair of 9500s in SLI driving a single monitor and another 9500 driving other monitors on it's own.

I suggest going with 3 Intel drives instead. I currently have 3 Vertex in RAID-0 and it just saturates the bus. The slightly faster access times of the Intel would be appreciated.

FYI: The G2s do ship with an adapter. It's basically just a metal plate, mounting the 2.5" drive from the bottom and the 3.5" from the side. There is no way it is compatible with any kind of hot-swap, as the 2.5" drive is centered in the 3.5" space.

Basically what I'm looking for is an AWD mud-capable station wagon with a decent non-manual transmission. From what I can tell they are only made my Audi.
