    Athlon64 3000 - who's taking the $215 plunge?

They probably should have named PCI Express something like PCI Wave (PCI-W)....thus preventing simple slips like this, as I know that Liam certainly knows the difference. :D

Personally I would go with: Unfortunately, in the realm of the wireless user, very little can be done to aid performance.

    Command line DVD burning solution?

BTW, does anyone know what the story is behind cdtools/cdrecord ? (Merc maybe?) The fact that there was a name change, an illegal branch, a non GPL version for DVD, and what seems like 48 different web/ftp sites packed with the same or somewhat similar info is all rather confusing. Examples...

Is this supposed to be serious press?

Its a Simpsons reference Coug. Its the sound Homer makes while salivating (as visualized here and volcalized here). Homer often salivates after making a "mmmmm, _______" statement, such as: - http://meltingpot.fortunecity.com/guinea/851/beer.wav -...

Several days ago I began to suspect that a certain new forum member ("unregistered") over at SR was Michael Schutte, authour of those articles and webmaster at Lost Circuits. Tonight I'm 99% sure. [The conspiracy theorest in me also rather suspects that he maybe behind a number of other...

    front panel USB ports

Yep. Learned that one a while back when Mercutio had posted a link to the USB org. According to their desires, the correct nomenclature for low speed or full speed devices is should simply be "USB", while high speed devices should recieve a "High-Speed USB" designation.

Gary: WHERE is your 2nd beagle, and how come he's so far...

Maybe the Martians just don't want to be discovered. You would think NASA, the Russians (and now the European Space Agency too) would have learnt by now that the awesome destructive powers of Martian death rays are not forces that should be reckoned with.

    RIP MSI YMFPOS

Doug, try unplugging the PSU, take the battery out of the mobo and leave it for a bit (maybe overnight....working on things when your angry is no fun). Give it a shot tommorow...maybe swap the video card first before you fire it back up. .

    front panel USB ports

This is something that I've been curious about for a while: You know the front panel USB ports that many cases come with (example), is there anything about them that inherently makes them "2.0" or are they all just a conduit to the motherboard (whose controller would then determine whether it...

    Saddam Hussein captured.

Bill, thank you for the link, I enjoyed reading the essay. 1) It would appear that Chomsky is himself rather two faced. However, the fact that Chomsky may be a raging "nut case", or better yet, someone who has never come to terms with the fact that he use to shake pom-poms in support of Pol...

    Does anyone remember when ...

Alright, so I exagerate a bit. But I certainly do seem to recall load times and installation times being rather drawn out. Beyond HDDs, were there not many people who had burners and rom drives stuck in PIO mode? Got my trusty O'Reilly books to guide me through it....by this time next year I...

A lot to agree with there. Although I am primarily a W2K user (and relatively happy with it....though it does seem to be beginning to get a little long in the tooth), before SP2 it was indeed crippled - what was IDE stuck in again? ATA33 or was it PIO, I can't remember. I'm not much of an...

Mitsubishi Chemical Co. (MCC), Leadata, TDK, Princo, Plasmon, Ricoh, Taiyo Yuden..... Just have a look through that link I provided earlier for some more. And so, what was the outcome? As a tertiary tale, I sold my LiteOn 48246S burner last month but had yet removed the older installation...

Not true. While the very first LiteOn DVD burner, the LDW-400D, was indeed a rebadged Sony 500A/X, LiteOn has gone on to produce three of its very own drives: LDW-401S .... reviewed here and here LDW-411S .... reviewed here LDW-811S .... reviewed here As for the other brands, there are...

Here's a new spin on P2P networks. In the other very related news, I find it quite interesting that "the ruling will not help those previously identified". The first thing I thought of when I saw that appeals court decision was "I wonder what's going to happen with all those cases of...

As Tim's post is now a couple of months old, its quite possible newer firmware updates are available...both official Pioneer, and 3rd party hacks. There is no one best media. The results with a specific media type in a one drive (and its associated firmware) will quite possibly be very...

    Guide to crappy xmas carols

To which do you refer? The (a) label "world music" or (b) the actual music itself? If the label, then yes its stupid. But hey, I didn't invent the term. If its a distaste for the actual music itself, I suggest you do the following: stop watching Nascar, get out of your tri-county...

    Guide to crappy xmas carols

Yes the first 10-15 seconds or so do suck...I thought it was going to be a country and western song at first. But when it gets going, and outside the jinggle bells chorus itself, I think its well done - the blend of Western and Indian. You definitely also have to give it some volume to get...

US government agency takes on Pop-up software

In a corporate environment authentication is a great idea. But on XP home edition?? No - It should be disabled by default. To me, MS's response to this exploit falls nothing short of lackadaisical.

US government agency takes on Pop-up software

Pop-Up Go the Weasels I read yesterday that MS is finally going to plug the messenger service by default in the forthcoming XP SP2. It boggles my mind that they have let this slide so long. I also read an article recently (from where I can no longer recall) about the growing interest in...
