    Tesltra Big Pong

My partner here is spouting anagrams of Telstra as she contemplates sleep: Telstra startle sel tart starlet ratlets arslett staler t rattles tel rats tatlers arsttel Okay, enough already. No computer or pen and paper folks. Just idle thoughts with her head on the pillow. 8) One...

    Tesltra Big Pong

Yeah, I know a guy with it that phones me every now and then to gloat. Mercutio, if it's any consolation, unless I reboot my (cable) modem every 2 to 5 days, the performance is nowhere near as good as a 28800 connection. I have a backup ISP (iPrimus) on dialup, and occasionally I use it to...

I don't, but I know people locally who do. At least you can sleep at nights knowing you can't get a $1000 excess usage bill in the mail, as many Big Pong customers have. The stuff I linked is only the tip of the iceberg. The latest is that we (yes, I'm one of the suckers) have to agree to new...

    The Systems that Sell

ECS and Asus are supposedly about equal size. Gigabyte and MSI are roughly equal size but significantly smaller than the first two. MSI had some OEM wins that moved it ahead of Gigabyte last year. After that we're talking second tier. This includes FIC, Epox (remarkable growth), Shuttle and...

Perhaps we should have a contest: who has the worst telco? http://australianit.news.com.au/article2/0,7237,3669003^15301^^nbv^,00.html

    Tesltra Big Pong

Telstra is a virtual monopolist telco in Australia. They have frequently been compared to Microsoft. Suffice to say they are not popular, but there is often no alternative provider. http://www.zdnet.com.au/newstech/communications/story/0,2000024993,20263181,00.htm

    Internet Explorer 5.0 problems

Learned. Perversely, after criticizing Opera 6 when it came out, I'm somewhat more relaxed now, and use it a lot. But I won't register it until they relase the next build - IMO if you've already paid for verion 5, there's no where near enough in 6 to justify paying again. Interestingly Coug...

    2U Server: Mainboard Dilemma

I think you mean the GA-6IWFL. Its version of the i810 has a 133MHz FSB, so that's okay. And it has an onboard Intel network adaptor. But it's a FlexATX form factor, not ATX or MicroATX. Are you sure it will line up? I think you'll find the first PCI slot is where the AGP slot normally is. Is...

    Going to foxwoods!

Gambling is something Australians know a thing or two about: Australia's richest man Kerry Packer blew US$29 million in casinos after being stranded in Las Vegas by the World Trade Centre terrorist attacks.  The legendary punter was forced to extend his stay in the US gambling capital for a...

    2U Server: Mainboard Dilemma

The Gigabyte GA-6OXET is available locally and supports Tualatin (signified by the "T" in the product code). It is i815 with 6 PCI slots. Don't know if it fits ... http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/products/6oxet.htm The GA-6OXET-C is also available and would be fine for your application (it loses...

Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions, including Ian (who I badgered by email). I have 'solved' my yellow cast problem. The Epson twain software supports three different methods of preview color correction. I was pursuing this angle by fiddling with everything I could find in that area...

    The Systems that Sell

The key difference is that Tony is not promoting those systems. Just by being able to provide them if required, he can better explain what his customer is getting for the money. Bait and switch involves promoting a product you have no (or little) intention of selling. Legally and morally these...

Stereodude, Thanks for the suggestions. We have Photoshop, and the cast is bad enough to make complete correction very difficult (beyond my patience, in other words). If anyone is interested, I can email (compressed) both the positive and negative scans we are using in our discussion with Epson.

SiS645 chipset, are you tempted to turn to Intel again?

Cougtek, Northwood is indeed a different kettle of fish, by any measure. I hope Barton will feature huge improvements over the regular Palomino core or else, it will be Intel's year. But I'm not sure I understand what aspects of the Athlon you want AMD to improve? Surely not IPC?

Mercutio, Tony usually quotes Australian pricing in Australian dollars, and including tax. As a minimum, divide by two for US$. Items such as monitors are often worse - reduce to 40% or even lower. So an item that costs US$400 may cost from AU$800 to AU$1000 here ... Unfortunately, the...

    Scanning photographs

LOL. No, the color temp is not adjustable - neither is much else for that matter, but that belongs to a separate grizzle. The scanner is not for me, it's for customers. Compared to Canon and others, this is practically a mid-range scanner, believe it or not :-? Tea, I thought they were good...

    Scanning photographs

Let me rephrase the problem. The normal scans have reasonable color accuracy. Scans with the film attachment (with its own external light source) are yellowish. One possible explanation is that the external light is too purple (therefore exposed areas on the negative come out yellow). Epson...

    Scanning photographs

We've been playing with a low end Epson scanner, the 1250 Photo. It comes with a slide and film adaptor, but I've been unhappy with the results. Scans of photographic prints have slight tonal problems with blue/green colors, but that's more an irritation. The big gripe is that scans of 35mm...

SiS645 chipset, are you tempted to turn to Intel again?

Your problem, Cougtek, is that you're falling into the megahurts trap. That P4/1700 surely isn't a Northwood, so you're comparing Apples to Oranges. Try comparing an Athlon XP 1700+ with a P4 1900 instead to make a fair comparison (although by the time you add in the effects of the chipset, a...

    Hyperthreading (SMT)

I confess I have no idea how it's supposed to help. If it pretends to split the entire CPU, then that would suggest that it's making up for poor arbitration in the OS. My guess is that Intel reckons they can achieve some sort of sub-processor optimization by doing this. Sounds like optimizing...
