    Amtrak shut down imminent

When you start to compare the real costs of any form of transport to rail, rail generally wins hands down. I'll do such a comparison here, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each transportation mode: ROAD Direct operating costs: 1. fuel 2. vehicle maintainance 3. insurance 4...

    Amtrak shut down imminent

I started this topic on SR but consider it important enough to post here also since some of you no longer visit SR's B&G. Here is a link to the thread at SR: http://forums.storagereview.net/viewtopic.php?t=3953 :x :x :x < This doesn't even begin to describe how mad I am that Congress...

Jason hasn't posted on SR for one week!

Yeah, that's him. He was formerly k-tech on SR, and he did live in or around Lewisville(at least several address changes ago). And he has 3337 posts(mostly CNN/AP news cut and pastes) since he re-registered on SR late last December which is why nearly everyone here has complained about him in...

Jason hasn't posted on SR for one week!

I was just by SR and I noticed that there weren't any new topics or posts by Jason, so just out of curiosity I checked when his last post was, and found it is was on Tue Jun 11, 2002 at 8:17 pm, or just over a week ago. Am I the only one here who is completely dumbfounded by this? Or is anyone...

That about sums it up. Jason is so relentless that he must be part Borg. I think the last dozen times I've engaged Jason in a discussion all ended with me throwing in the towel.

    SR Signal to Noise

For various reasons I've been posting here more and on SR less. My main problem with SR now isn't so much the lack of knowledgeable people but rather the generally hostile tone being set by many of the people there, especially Jason's "friends" who hijack threads just to air their dirty...

Anyone care to speculate on the limits of magnetic storage?

I've mentioned somewhere about the possibility of using nanotechnology for this. It is currently possible to make microscopic mechanisms(gears, motors, etc) etched directly out of a silicon wafer, so perhaps using the conventional voice coil for gross positioning(+- 100 tracks), and the...

Anyone care to speculate on the limits of magnetic storage?

This might help your analogy a bit: Product Specifications(Maxtor D540X-4G) Number of Servo Sectors: 224 Data Zones per Surface: 16 Data Sectors per Track (ID/OD): 448/896 Areal Density (Gbits/in 2 max, ID/OD): 27.7/25.2 Flux Density (kfci, ID/OD): 506/461 Recording Density (kbpi, ID/OD)...

    I need a drink

This sounds to me like she's still in love with you but has physical needs that you can't fulfill. One thing curious about all this is why did it take her so long to discover that she, um, preferred woman? And since it did, maybe her desire is really more of a curiosity than an actual sexual...

Anyone care to speculate on the limits of magnetic storage?

Any ideas on how large magnetic mechanical hard drives will get before some insurmountable technological limit is reached? It seems that every time we get close to reaching the limits of storage technology something new like IBM's "pixie dust" comes along. I'll start with my thoughts on the...

    The Giver revealed...

Those are my feelings regarding the matter as well. The truth is that there will never be peace between people who are bred to hate each other. There is also the little problem that both sides feel their respective faiths entitle them to the same land. Since such faith is based on unchanging...

    The Giver revealed...

As much as I hate to admit it in a public forum those two statements are both true in a general sense(of course they don't apply to every individual of Jewish heritage). Since my city has a very large(and vocal) Jewish population I feel that I'm an expert on this particular subject. In a...

    The Giver revealed...

If what you are saying is true, then doesn't the continued US support of Israel create a source of instability in the region? Might not Israel be better off relocating somewhere else since it is not really wanted in that region?. Some parts of the desert in Nevada come to mind since this is...

    The Giver revealed...

I think their primary mission is to kill Americans and Jews. If they had some agenda beyond that, they would have made demands after they hijacked the planes. They didn't. If they had considered themselves at war with the United States they would have only chosen to hit military or government...

    The Giver revealed...

Indeed it was. Besides the one person I personally knew, a friend of mine knew someone, and one of my mother's friends also knew someone. Although I have nothing but anecdotal evidence to back me up, I would venture to guess that most of the people in NYC either had a friend who lost someone...

Mercutio, I'm really sad to hear about your current situation, and I think anyone who has ever cared about someone goes through what you are at some point in their life. I know it might be a little presumptuous of me to say this, but the best thing for you now might be to get out a bit more...

Storage Forum New York City Tour Guide

Leather is fairly popular among the under 30 crowd, but I'm not sure about the steel cap boots. I just never notice what people are wearing on their feet for some reason. If black is your color, you'll fit right in, especially in the Asian sections of the city(Chinatown and Flushing), which is...

I don't know about you, but I've always visualized Tannin looking like Crocodile Dundee. I know that's probably 100% inaccurate(just the product of my overactive imagination). As for what Oz would look like, I've always thought of either the "Mad Max" movies, or what I saw of it on TV...

What should I do with this POS?

The Powerleap and Evergreen Pentium upgrades generate the higher frequency by multiplying the motherboard frequency of 100 MHz or 133 MHz. I think the 400 MHz Powerleap upgrade uses a multiplier of 3, so all the M/B has to put out is 133 MHz.

What should I do with this POS?

I can't tell the exact number of your M/B from those pictures, but it is definitely not a 570, since that is what I'm using for my everyday "Internet" computer. As to upgradeability, my M/B does not support 64 MB SIMMs so it maxes at at 128 MB, which is what I have(there is no built-in RAM)...

    Volunteers/help wanted for a project

Is the DellDude an IDIOT or What?

    Exciting technology

    Unable To Save Forum Pages

I found a workaround to the problem which isn't too bad. First I save the page as an .mht file. I then open the .mht file offline in IE and save as "Web page(complete)". It saves OK that way, and it's only an extra step, which isn't too time-consuming. :)

I can save in plain text also, but since the forums have pictures and smilies and so forth, I prefer to save in html. If you could do one thread in the final format you prefer, maybe I can eventually find the time to edit the whole bunch in that same format. I've been a bit busy as of late...

The glow is from the searchlights at ground zero, although the pic does look a bit edited. It may have been taken on a foggy day, though. I can sometimes see the tops of those light towers from my backyard 10 miles away. Nice picture but the truth is I'd rather have the towers back. Nearly...

    How much RAM??

I'm not sure if any kind of petition would be a good idea. Jason is starting his new job today, so hopefully the problem will go away on it's own. I do agree that it is becoming a distraction, and Jason's posts keep popping up like New York cockroaches. I consider this whole thing a mixed...

    World Trade Center photos

Those pictures were rather haunting, and brought back a few things, to say the least. I have 3000+ photos relating to the WTC from various sources, but most are low resolution and don't convey the sheer horror of it like those pictures do. I'm probably one of the few at SF or SR who has seen...

The future of storage technology ?

Interesting idea, but it has to be made to operate at room temperature. If the effect reverses above -23° C, you're basically screwed if the refrigeration system gives out. I think the future of storage is non-volatile RAM. There are a bunch of contenders using various technologies, and it'll...
