    160gb maxtor Diamond Plus 9

Yeah, but I found Maxtor seek noises to be a lot more prominent than other brands. More like an older SCSI drive and completely unsuitable for a quiet PC. But then I only tried a couple.

    TNT2 16MB vs. Geforce2 MX200 32MB

Depends how fast the TNT2 is and how poor the MX200 implementation is. If the TNT2 is a Pro or Ultra version, then it will probably out-perform the MX200 in 32-bit color. The latter is really only suitable for 16-bit. If the TNT2 is only an M64/Vanta, you'll get better results with the MX200...

The fact that they've almost certainly short-stroked the 15K drives as part of the design, doesn't seem to trouble them. It's a bit like arguing that 80GB drives are twice as reliable as 40GB, because you only need to use half as many ... I agree with P5-133XL.

    New NForce Drivers

With a WD800JB drive, my Business Disk Winmark 99 score went from 12600 to 22200. nVidia rocks! :joker: Unfortunately, High-end Disk Winmark went from 38500 to just 39600, which is within the 3% margin of error.

    DDR400

Yeah, but at higher speeds it seems to fade into the background. Corsair makes a living selling so-called "High Performance" DRAM for 2 to 3 times the normal price. I think the article shows that their marketing is smoke. The fact is, vastly cheaper modules equalled or bettered their...

LOSTCIRCUITS has a comparison of eight different PC3200 modules. It's particularly interesting for some of the technical explanations that Michael Schuette includes. I've run some tests that confirm his assertions, at least with my setup. CAS 2.5 and 3 perform identically on my sample...

    Memory Upgrade : 256 MB Dimms on a P2L97

I think what you're saying is that ZX was extremely lucky? I've tried 256MB on 440BX without success - but then maybe I haven't tried enough different boards. :)

    Memory Upgrade : 256 MB Dimms on a P2L97

That's a pretty amazing result. Makes me question what I've been told about memory compatibility ... :-? I still find it hard to believe that a chipset designed for PC66 (?) is working with current (?) 256MB PC133! Are they double sided as Jan suggested?

The motherboard to car analogy project

I've not only heard of DFI, I used their boards. In general, they were very good, with the sort of extra features that Asus used to pride themselves on. My argument was that FIC was more appropriate for the mass market of General Motors.

    PS/2 Port

Whoops, I forgot you said notebook. Unless the manufacturer used it to power accessories, I wouldn't even count on the 500mA - laptops seem to have less margin in every other respect when compared to desktops, particularly anything that draws power. :( But I'm afraid that's just a guess.

    Memory Upgrade : 256 MB Dimms on a P2L97

Motherboards have a list of module chip configurations that they can recognize. If you go outside that list, you'll see wacko RAM sizes as Mercutio points out. If the board manual says 128MB maximum (and that's the case for LX), then that really is the maximum you can put in there. At least...

    PS/2 Port

A common opinion is 500mA, or "a few hundred milliamps". For example. There's also a vague possibility that the mouse port won't have the same capacity as the keyboard port. I have no idea how you can check this. The keyboard port doesn't have fancy current limiting - it has a fuse. :) Which...

    PC Chips RAM compatibility

I've come to the conclusion that it must be a VX Pro or TX Pro rather than BX Pro. In which case, thanks Blake, that confirms that Crucial doesn't support it. I don't think I've ever even heard of anyone succeeding in using a 128MB DIMM with VX, let alone VX Pro? I had enough problems with the...

    PC Chips RAM compatibility

This is a topic from Hell (it involves PC Chips). One of my suppliers has referred someone to us, so I'm trying to do my best by him. He has a P233 on an Amptron(?) 'BX Pro' motherboard (circa 1998), which runs Netware 3.11 satisfactorily. :o It purportedly has 4 SIMM and 2 DIMM slots (I can't...

    Need new speakers...advice?

Piyono, I like Yamaha quality - I'm a long-term fan - but the speakers you suggested are just toys. I mean, a 4" woofer? If you only ever listen to light classical music, these would be a good choice. I can't think of any other musical or gaming application. :(

    Need new speakers...advice?

I like the 'look' of the Event speakers (active xover, damping material, no 'subwoofer', etc), but regrettably, I suspect they're just too small to be taken seriously. I see you can get the Altec 621 (2.1) for under $100 in some places, and I'd be interested in hearing someone explain to me how...

Another reason why I don't like Intel.

nVidia isn't a virtual monopoly. Standover tactics only work if the bully boy's threat really can hurt the victim. It's one of the biggest problems confronting small to medium businesses today. Australia just had a review of the relevant legislation, which has to date been spectacularly...

I agree. This behaviour undermines and corrupts the free market, the cornerstone of capitalism. It's unquestionably illegal, but what are the chances of convicting Intel in the US justice system?

    Best movie you've seen

Ultimate Zip looks pretty good. I think I'll use that for future installations - thanks Blakerwry. And I don't begrudge the author his splash screen; it's still less hassle than the WinZip equivalent, and using it doesn't violate any shareware agreement. Myself, I own both ZipMagic 2000 and...

He's actually ripping off The HAB Theory, a 1976 SF novel by Allan Eckert (which I happen to have). Which in turn was based on a theory proposed by Hugh Auchinclos Brown in his own book of 1967. You can read all about it at http://www.habtheory.com Here's an extract from a letter by Alan Eckert:
