    Behavioral Survey

I think it depends on how long a period you intend this to go on for. As a lifestyle, it's a big problem, but I agree that it's more effective than other medication. Unfortunately, I know exactly what you're talking about: I use caffeine to kick start myself in the mornings and alcohol to slow...

Sorry Doug, I'm tired and for some reason your post didn't register properly in my consciousness. I've avoided chiming in on several threads for this reason - it now seems I was right to lay low. (BTW, it nearly makes me choke to say "lay" instead of "lie" here. It's an instance where...

Trouble installing XP-Pro with new PC Build

I don't like the fact that Memtest fails in the same place (Test 5) with both modules (even though only one fails Test 6). I also don't like the mounting coincidences. First the ATA100/133 drive; now, not one, but two DRAM sticks. All of this could be explained by a bad motherboard. You...

    VPN client behind a router

I've noticed that lots of people have trouble getting VPN client software to work behind a router. Unfortunately, that now includes me. :( I could have sworn that I was successful with this Netgear WG624 about two months ago, but I'm starting to think maybe I went around it for the test. :(...

Using wireless in brick & cement structures

That's because concrete floors contain lots of steel mesh reinforcement. Signal definitely won't pass through steel walls but it will probably bounce around a fair bit. Brick (or concrete block) walls don't use much/any steel and you should be able to go through at least a couple of them (I'm...

    small businesss e-mail/calendar solution

Unless they've changed the pricing recently, it ain't cheap. :( Last time I looked, GroupWise was much cheaper. Why not just use Mozilla Sunbird and subscribe to a remote calendar? Eg: http://home.jesus.ox.ac.uk/it/pubns/TN074.pdf (79kB PDF) Alternatively, if you're feeling adventurous, you...

I can't get Thunderbird 0.8 to open an EML file through file association, i.e. "Open with". Absolutely nothing happens - Thunderbird doesn't even load. There's no such problem with Mozilla. Can anyone else duplicate this behaviour? There's also a glitch using the "Open saved message" menu...

    Spam filters

It only looks at headers. So if allowed, it will happily delete ham off your server that it thinks is spam! This is quite unlike proper server-side software in that you have no chance for review. If you choose to review spam, it downloads the message bodies anyway, thereby cancelling any...

Update: My iScribe data was indeed corrupt. I installed it from scratch and now it's easily matching Thunderbird. They're both pulling away from Foxmail. Athlon 64 3200+ 939?

That's an awesome effort from AMD! By my reckoning, the 130nm unit was pulling about the same as a P4 at the same frequency, but the 90nm unit looks to have bettered that by 20% or so! That's actually more than can be explained by the voltage drop from 1.5V to 1.4V. To put this in perspective...

    Help elsewhere? (forum ettiquitte?)

No, airflow doesn't work like that. You need strong extraction at the back of the case to have a tangible effect on something at the front. It's much easier to locate a fan close to whatever you're trying to cool. In fact, air velocity around the drive may be down if you have a giant hole in...

I guess you read this thread? I looked for it because after seeing the Zalman so-called cooler, I expected to find someone reporting how little (in this case no) difference it made. :-? The contact between the drive and the heatsink is just too poor, so I wouldn't expect that adding a second...

    O/C ing on S754--mobo recommendation

I explicitly checked for this, and it did not happen with my CG (either that, or the BIOS has been changed). Neither did it engage 2T (you can tell easily by comparing memory throughput after toggling the setting). I'd hazard a guess that DDR333 or T2 now kicks in with 3 modules.

I was going to post a screenshot of my overclocking results, but I can't access that computer right now. :( Anyway, changing the RAM helped enormously. Yes, I forgot about the cheaper K8NS Pro. Definitely. No problems with Cool 'n' Quiet and 2 DIMMs at stock speed on the K8NS Pro I've been testing. However, you should be aware that the Cool 'n' Quiet driver overrides the multiplier and voltage. So your overclocking will be limited to what...

That DFI looks good, Gilbo. www.mittoni.com.au offers it for AU$250 (inc tax), although you have to wait for importation. By way of comparison, the GA-K8NS Pro has the same features for about AU$200, as does an equivalent Via K8T800 for AU$180. I doubt that the former could scale the...

Newcastle 3000 (2GHz). It's a desktop CPU, but is there any design difference anyway? Stock AMD cooler, normally spins at around 3100rpm unless the CPU temperature gets over 40C or so. I'd say it's quiet at this speed and silent below 2500rpm. I tried a few tests with reduced CPU voltage and...

If it's a Newcastle, 12W. There's no such problem with the nForce3 250 based GA-K8NS Pro. At 2GHz and 1.5V with ambient of 22C, reported CPU temp got up to 39C with a burn-in program (sorry, not Prime95). With Cool 'n Quiet enabled (1GHz x 1.1V = 22W), it idles at 25C - regardless of whether...

Asus A8V Deluxe They haven't reviewed the K8N-E, but the Marvell-equipped Gigabyte nForce3 250 hit 734Mbps with 8% CPU utilization. For comparison: nVidia sample with nForce ethernet Frankly, I think I'd take their tests with a grain of salt when compared to the Aces Hardware review.

    Athlon64 3000 - who's taking the $215 plunge?

Regarding TechReport's review of the GA-K8NSNXP-939: The reviewer measured extraordinarily low 1394 throughput. He stated that no driver was included and that therefore the generic WinXP driver must be adequate, then concluded that the hardware was to blame. Having just set up a GA-8NS Pro...

WD SATA issue (maybe). Just a heads up

Just an update on the need or otherwise for a floppy-based SATA driver during Windows install/reload - albeit with Win2k rather than WinXP: Via KT600 (Gigabyte GA-7VT600 1394) = Yes nForce3 250 (Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro) = No This looks to be yet another reason to prefer an nForce3 250 solution...

    Athlon64 3000 - who's taking the $215 plunge?

Perhaps this is a workaround for the throughput issue? In any case, if you believe the TechReport test, the Marvel PCI solution worked quite satisfactorily, with very low CPU utilization to boot. I can't see that the board is intended as a server solution, and the measured network throughput is...

    Athlon64 3000 - who's taking the $215 plunge?

You read it wrong. :) The board has two 'ethernet' ports, but Gigabyte chose to equip just one with gigabit capability - I think that's what the author was whinging about. The benchmarks show the gigabit port delivering what I would have said was adequate throughput for a workstation.

    Athlon64 3000 - who's taking the $215 plunge?

LiamC, I'm aware of the problem, but I can't see it in this review. I believe they were unhappy that the manufacturer hadn't used the full chipset capability, but it seemed to work okay.

Ddrueding, I realize you've just had a bad experience with a Gigabyte board, but I'd suggest the GA-7NS Pro - except that the jury is still out on how well it supports mobile 64 CPUs. One PC stops entire network

It sounds good to me too - if only I could work out how it fits the situation. :( AFAIK, there is a single NT server, several workstations, a 16-port switching hub, and a Nokia DSL modem-router. How can you tell what devices are issuing DHCP leases?

If you are lucky enough to live in Oz, you can take your pick of DrayTek or Billion routers that include QOS. From what I've seen, they're vastly better than LinkSys, DLink or Netgear anyway. If you can afford ~AU$240 (inc GST), DrayTek Vigor 2900 is the bee's knees.
