    Netbook for the wife

Their Max TDP is nearly 5 times as much as a 1.6GHz Atom, and I'll bet that the difference is quite a lot more than that at idle or low load. While they're utilizing exactly the same HDDs, most real-world applications won't see double or triple the performance. FSB is only 50% higher. So you're...

    Netbook for the wife

I agree 100%. You can use netbooks to work on documents and surf the net without any problems, but you'd be crazy to run Photoshop on one. If you're doing image processing et al, use a bloody i7 and stop whining ... 90% of the time overall, you'd be hard pressed to tell what processor you had...

    Wireless

Me too. Although I like it a lot, I don't feel it's robust enough for general use, and it's definitely not for touch typists with real speed. It's great to be able to kill the room light and rest the eyes at night (sorry, JTR).

Delivering 1 Million IOPs Using Seven PCI Express Prototype SSDs

Out of interest, is that using DB2? 'Large' reports may not use indexes, but if they do, and the indexes are falling out of RAM, performance is guaranteed to suck. Indexes need several times as many I/Os as sequential table scans. Otherwise, partitioning is your friend - unless you're using MS...

Delivering 1 Million IOPs Using Seven PCI Express Prototype SSDs

If the drives are operating in parallel, and they're using 4kB blocks, each must be averaging nearly 600MB/s for a total of 4GB/s. They've opted for an unrealistic 2:1 read/write ratio. I'll bet they're relying on their 'lazy write' buffering to gather writes and keep speed close to reads...

    nVidia exits the chipset business

The current ones (last 12 months) seem pretty good to me. Smooth installation and no weirdness later. Obviously, the graphics are in a different league to Intel efforts and usually include DVI.

    nVidia exits the chipset business

While true a few months back, I think that's overstating the current situation a bit. The latest AMD cores are within a few percent of equivalently clocked C2D cores and are now being sold at reasonable prices. The i7 is obviously a different story again, but I contend that non-geeks aren't...

    Windows Offline Files

I initially resolved this by setting the root folder (but not subfolders) to be offline, then turning on just the subfolder structures that I needed (rinse and repeat etc). However, it looks like I underestimated Windows. :o As long as you create a shortcut, it will happily 'fill in the blanks'...

    Windows Offline Files

I want to provide local copies of two or more directory trees for offline use on a laptop. Previously, I used a 3rd party product for this, but the vendor is long gone and I can't find the license. I can see how to redirect a system folder such as My Documents to a single folder (and...

    1TB Drives?

I only buy drives one at a time these days, so I don't know how useful my observations are. I disagree with Mark, the current Hitachi models aren't any hotter than anything else. In fact, the 1TB Hitachi in the PC in front of me is cool to the touch, and therefore much cooler than the 250GB...

    8 x 1.5TB + Perc 6i + RAID-6 = Faster Storage

The RAID10 write performance seems too low to me. Is Writeback disabled or something? Not sure how useful some of these tests are for database work. AFAIK, it's worth keeping an eye on the 8kB block performance. With this in mind, the RAID 6 alternative may not offer as much as at first glance...

    Slow disk

So you're saying that when Windows detects abnormally slow storage request handling (but not slow enough to trigger a timeout), it responds by slowing the process even further - by more than an order of magnitude in fact. If it was able to detect a problem (self-evident because of the mode...

    Slow disk

Spot on guys, although it didn't show up as appreciable CPU utilization. Running in PIO Mode 2 (from memory). Extra points to Mark for a comprehensive explanation of why! Now running in DMA Mode 6 and producing about 95MB/s in ATTO. So transfers (and commands) were more than ten times slower...

    Slow disk

I'm definitely out of practice with this stuff. :( PC runs like molasses, more specifically it appears to be the hard drive running slow. Evidence includes: the SMART diagnosis of SpeedFan yields a single bar for performance, and ATTO is so slow I gave up before any results were displayed. Same...

    Yet another Norton Sucks thread

Customer wanted to replace Norton's 'security' sh*t on their PC. No problem, I carefully uninstalled "Norton 360" first, accepting the prompt to restore the Windows Firewall. Naturally, the Norton uninstall f**ked up Vista, so now there's no firewall at all. The firewall service can't start...

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

I don't have access to 90+ CRI fluorescent lamps, but my personal experiences with high color temperature CFLs such as Philips "Cool Daylight" have resulted in excessive glare. I assumed this is why many people prefer low color temperature "Warm White" lamps. My own preference is 4000K around...

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

I have the same problem, Mark, and the same concerns. What I also noticed the other day was how much clearer printed text was when I was near a window, than under artificial light. To my surprise, the light meter told me that light levels on the page were actually quite modest. Could it be...

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

You're mistaken Uda. It's all about contrast and color rendition. Ideally, you don't want your light source to be visible at all - like daylight indoors, in other words. The lack of glare that ensures means effective contrast is very high. If the light source is visible, the iris in your eye...

When will you upgrade to Windows 7?

Let's see, I finally upgraded my PCs to XP last year, and it was released late 2001. The PC in front of me is still running 2000. So I figure I'll be switching to 7 around 2016.

    Random help

I wouldn't worry too much about energy usage differences; the main way a washer saves energy is by having less water to heat. Front-loaders already use far less water than top-loaders, so saving those last few liters isn't particularly useful unless you're reliant on tank water. The thing is...

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

I've usually found no-name CFLs to be poor in every aspect: reliability, longevity, color rendition and brightness. This test supports that prejudice. I've seen US tests that put GE and Osram head and shoulders above the others in terms of reliability at least. The linked test confirms my own...

    Fast 16GB USB Flash Drive

Sorry about the delay, Mubs. The drive itself doesn't have the model number on it, so I waited until I had a chance to go back to the store. The 4GB is 47332 and the 8GB 47333. Both also have the code 0802-58, if that means anything.

    Opinions on Google Chrome? APPS?

Thanks Timwhit, I thought it was just my imagination. I'd agree with everything you said. I toyed with Chrome earlier but found it hopelessly incompatible with intranet stuff - it's probably much better now. I assumed that was why it felt fast: less handling of complex or unexpected stuff.

    Fast 16GB USB Flash Drive

The drive I measured was in fact a 4GB version. I did find some specs somewhere that suggested that all sizes have the same performance, which is unusual. They're all ReadyBoost compatible, by the way. Without seeing someone else's tests first, I wouldn't have considered Verbatim because I...

    Fast 16GB USB Flash Drive

You probably can't get them, and I couldn't be bothered posting the graph, but Verbatim flash drives are remarkably good value. Not sure about international relativities, but 16GB costs about US$50 here. I just measured 29MB/s reads and 15MB/s writes. According to some fairly recent tests I...

    Affordable graphics cards

The 4350 has 242 million transistors, the 4850 956 million. The 4350 has 80 shaders, the 4850 800. Why are you surprised that they need different drivers? The package is the installation source - not the actual installation. The driver is configured and installed from the package to suit the...

    Affordable graphics cards

Actually, I'd guess the main reason nVidia is still outselling them is availability. Whenever ATI releases a new model, they always seem to sell out and then stock remains intermittent until the model is obsolete. For instance, nVidia doesn't have anything to hold a candle to the 4770 I...

    Over the edge

If you look at the Features tab on this page, you can see the 80+ specification. The last one I built used an AMD M2 with HD3200 IGA, and apart from the hard drive, it was silent. I suspect the stock Intel cooler gets noisier when things get busy, but that's why I undervolted the E6300. With a...

    Over the edge

The HDD bay has a perforated grill for cooling. The HDD has been mounted in the FDD bay and the HDD cage removed to provide freer airflow to the power supply - which is an 80+ unit, by the way. The 'airbox' and baffle work better than anything like this I've tried myself (note the dust filter...

    End of AMD for me

The new E6300 performs pretty much as expected - I don't know that anyone would be able to tell the difference between this and an E7400 (AFAIK the only difference is an increase in L2 from 2MB to 3MB). On my tests, I don't believe 4GHz is going to be stable, but 3.7GHz definitely is, and 3.8...

    Over the edge

So it's all together and tested. I'll try to post pictures in a day or so. Thermally, this is a really impressive case design, possibly the best unmodified case I've ever used. The baffle turns the CPU fan into the intake fan, there's an air box to dampen fan noise, airflow across the HDD, and...

    Affordable graphics cards

The ATI 4770 I scored works as well as the handful of reviews on the net suggest. Given the minimal power requirements, the dual-slot cooling solution that came with this XFX model is ludicrous.
