    Seagate Barracuda ES 750GB

Maybe it's just me, but this seems like a half-assed solution. You have to have a buy an adapter card. You have to run four separate cables. You can't have all of the drives in a RAID array. They should offer it with just an internal to external adapter bracket, with a single connector...

    dvd shrink and dual core

This wouldn't work with MPEG, as it uses key-framing; so, some frames depend upon previous ones. Because in live-action motion pictures, very little changes from frame to frame, a lot of space can be saved by only encoding the differences, much like joint stereo in MP3.

    dvd shrink and dual core

I'm pretty sure that's exactly the case. I don't think that the author did anything special; we all just lucked-out. There's usually some time of gain from multithreaded applications, but the tendency of threads to be highly interdependent makes it difficult to get a massive advantage based...

    dvd shrink and dual core

I can't really tell you much about Lancer other than it's based on AoTuv and extremely fast. This is mostly because the codec's pages are in Japanese, and even the folks of HydrogenAudio don't seem to be able to glean a lot of technical informaiton. Considering how decoding of audio works, I'm...

    Samsung WDC buyout rumor

Sony isn't a name that I'd associate with batteries, either. But, until the recent debacle, if someone had told a consumer that his laptop had a Sony battery, he'd feel a lot better about it than if it had an IBM battery.

    dvd shrink and dual core

I believe that DVDShrink has two (for the most part) independent threads. So, when each thread can have a processor core to itself, things go a bit faster. Honestly, very little software out there will give this kind of magical gain right of the box. It seems to me that a number of encoder...

    Samsung WDC buyout rumor

I would expect the opposite. And perhaps it's a question of clientele. No body ever got fired for buying Big Blue, but it sure cost some money. Hitachi, on the other hand, is well known in consumer electronics. If I build a computer for someone, they know who Hitachi is. If I were to tell...

NEWS: "USB Flash Drives Are Failing"

It's not so much an abomination as it is an extremely poorly used tool. It should be limited to short animation sketches and web games, and never used as the primary interface to a site. I started using an optimised build of Firefox which comes with the Flash plugin by default, so no dealing...

    $280 NIC

The fact of the matter is that the extra $350 of a T-1 goes to quality measures which are fairly negligible to the vast majority of users. For games, most of the ping time is on the other end of the wire anyway.

    80mm ->92mm convertor + fan == better temps?

No point in getting one with my case, if my motherboard has one. My current desktop came with one of the aforementioned small ones that sits on the motherboard's header, giving you the option to hook it up to something else or have no beeps at all, if you wish.

    1TB hard drive

The 7200RPM laptop drives are plenty snappy, and most folks cannot tell the differences on STR. If they went with the bigger height form facter, they could slip more platters in there. SCSI is already going that way (although, for different reasons).
