This Buffalo is decent, especially after the price drop. DD-WRT out of the box and the gigabit ports actually do gigabit transfers. I paid $90 or so at the time, and it has been well behaved.

Edit time expired: Of course, I meant expanding a partition on a basic disk. I expanded the C: partition on a basic disk from 60GB to 100GB just before replying to ddrueding; I couldn't remember if my rescue mission involved dynamic or basic disks, so I made sure before posting.

The basic disk I just expanded would beg to differ. You can expand basic disks on the same physical drive, subject to restrictions. Quote from here.

If Win7, the built-in partition expansion works well (so long as you back up and delete the neighboring partition).

Maxburn's post reminded me that I installed this Cisco in a 6 computer office at least a couple of years ago. Hasn't given any problems. I haven't needed to use VPN, so I can't say how it performs in that respect. Whoops. Cisco declared it End of Life as of 1/31/10.

I don't know about actual quality, but advertised quality is better; Ultrastar error rate is 1 in 10^15, while Deskstar is 1 in 10^14 ( 1 in 113TB vs 1 in 11.3TB) and 5 year warranty vs. 3 year.

My 83+ year old grandparents have used their Panasonic 42" plasma for 3-4 years now without developing burn-in. You can be damn sure they aren't taking any special care; grandfather leaves CNBC on for hours most mornings.

SMP only here. Fastest is AMD 1090T. If Intel hadn't FUBAR'd the SB chipset, I'd have an additional 3 -bigadv capable systems running until spring.

Yuck! A while back (1997-8?) my boss' daughter did the same to our color Okidata. Only one sheet and I was able to rescue the printer by printing about 500 blank pages via the straight paper path. Smelled awful for about a week.

Adjusting or even turning off "interrupt moderation" (if such a setting is available for your NIC) can help also boost XFER rates. My early Intel desktop 1000BT NICs perform much better with it off.

If you replace a run of Monster Cable (speaker wire, IIRC) with a wire hanger, people can't hear a difference. I don't remember if the experiment was well constructed or not.
