    question Which RAM

The Intel i5-2500K officially uses DDR3-1066/1333 ( http://ark.intel.com/products/52210/Intel-Core-i5-2500K-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_70-GHz ) however most Z68 boards do allow DDR3-1600 to work as well... low-end laser printers these days?

Mubs, see if Kyocera-Mita is an option in your area of the world... Cheaper than HP (both printer and toner), never had an issue with print quality, and PCL support (and PS for those models with Postscript support) is excellent. But AFAIK HP no longer do the toner thing on most models of printer.

    How long do drives last.

Also, based on personal experience I see most failures within 6months, and mostly not until 3+ years... which fits in with their report... (All drives have typically had active cooling in place, and treated well by the technicians). But in interesting observation made by a friend who works in a...

Here is a research article by Google Engineers from back on '07, mainly for comparison. http://research.google.com/archive/disk_failures.pdf Unfortunately, publicly available peer-reviewed research on large numbers of failures and their conditions is very rare... low-end laser printers these days?

Yes, there is, provided you stick with Inkjets that are targeted towards the Office environment and not home users. (Like Dave mentioned, the OfficeJet Pro series, or the Epson WorkForce series).

    low-end laser printers these days?

+1. This is what we do, even though we have an Epson Inkjet (that prints very good photos), it's cheaper to use KMart/BigW/Officeworks for printing photos. When our LaserJet 1200 failed recently (worn parts, that it was cheaper to buy new than replacement parts), we found that most low-end...

What constitutes "basic computer knowledge" in 2014?

I think my thoughts are along the same lines: 1. Files and folders, including navigation. 2. Printer management. (You'll be amazed how many people don't know about printer settings or even that a print spool exists). 3. Windows/Mac/Linux, etc ll have different applications for doing the same...

    Windows 8.1

The one thing I liked about the Win7 backup, was the backup itself was a dynamically sized VHD, which could be booted using VMWare/VirtualBox on another machine... (Most people didn't realise the backup file itself was a VHD, that literally was a block for block copy of the existing harddrive).

Thanks for the info. As I said, the documentation doesn't make it clear. (And I only have Win8.1 in a VM solely for using "remote assistance" with the rest of the family who lice interstate, so certainly not a big user of Windows these days).

There are a couple (as already mentioned). Additional ones are: 1. Backup and Restore has been deprecated in Windows 8. It's now File Versions, if you are using the integrated backup solutions. State of Internet connectivity

In my experience, cable can be faster than ADSL but here in Australia your cable connection was shared with a massive number of people, so you were all effectively sharing the 22Mbps (which was at the time the fastest offered) with up to 50 other people (and some instances it was even worse). So...

Totally agree there. (most of my long range trips in the past always had a break every 200-300km for either bathroom/food/drinks). If they can get the charge fast enough, eg the typical time for a 15min reset stop, then the range becomes less an issue... but that relies on two things: The...

Want to run headless server without video card - but it won't boot

Integrated should give you the lowest power usage, as you're not having to drive all the extra electronics on the discrete card. (between PCIe bridges, RAM, etc, they add up). Mind you if you want the lowest possible power requirement, nothing is really going to beat: 1. Atom based ITX/mATX...

Want to run headless server without video card - but it won't boot

Unless your dealing with something really old, (a 2D only card), even an old GeForce FX5200 PCI will consume 25W. (IIRC, regular PCI 32/33 slots can provide up to 25W of power, and most PCI gfx cards do use that). Also quickly checking most review sites didn't start to include TDP as part of...

Want to run headless server without video card - but it won't boot

See if there are any boot failure options in the BIOS, and disable as needed/available. And what do you mean by low power? I assume low Wattage... then an AMD HD5450 based solution will give the lowest TDP for a modern card. (6.4W idle / 19W max). nVidia, a 8400GS ot GT610 based will also work...
