    Spanned disks under w2k3

Have a look at http://www.lto.org/newsite/index.html and http://www.ultriumlto.com/ - proprietary issues solved. With my Tandberg I can go cross platform and cross backup package, as long as the backup program is LTO capable. I would hate to try and backup 2TB of data on 8 or even 50GB media...

    Spanned disks under w2k3

You were right, when I booted up w2k3 without the drives attached it noted them as missing in Disk Management. I then re-cabled the lot and the spanned disk pair was recognised on reboot. Perhaps it was dumb luck that I managed to cable them correctly or otherwise w2k3 knew what to do with the...

    Spanned disks under w2k3

Thx for the advice. I spanned as a temporary measure, bought a Tandberg 420LTO on Friday to backup the data and kill the span. In my infite wisdom I got ahead of myself. I'm going to boot using a Knoppix livecd first to see wheter I can discern the non-spanned drives from the spanned pair...

    Spanned disks under w2k3

I have 5 identical Hitachi 400GB SATA hard drives installed in one of my PCs' running Windows Server 2003, SP1. Two of these drives are spanned to form one logical drive letter. I've not had any problems with the spanned volume, however, whilst installing a SCSI card to install a tape backup...

Looking for a suitable RAID controller

Ok, I understand where you're coming from. What would you suggest I do to get the offline drives online on occasion to facilitate a backup? Is there some sort of housing I could purchase to hook them up via as the idea of opening a case periodically to unhook other drives, cable drives for...

Looking for a suitable RAID controller

Aah, but you miss the point, the possibilities and playlists are endless. If you're a music lover you'd understand. Besides, CDs are going the way of the dinosaur, it's just a matter of time...

    ACK! Understood :eekers:

Looking for a suitable RAID controller

Based on my experience I figure add-in RAID cards are usually easier to source than replacement mobos with the same chipsets as an earlier mobo Could you explain your reasoning - if I'm going down an unsuitable path then now is the time for me to find out...

Looking for a suitable RAID controller

Your point is noted, however, I'm going to be driving the music library using Squeezebox 2 - http://www.slimdevices.com/ , which makes ripping CDs a necessity. Whilst it is monotonous, with a fast PC, EAC and an Internet connection, it is quite painless - just throw in a CD whenever you walk by...

Looking for a suitable RAID controller

Agreed, the mobo does support R5, however, I've been burned before relying on on-board raid chipsets and not being able to get to the data after a mobo failure. The RAID5 solution is attractive because it's a "set and forget" solution - will safeguard my data unless I have a power surge or...

Looking for a suitable RAID controller

Because I'm in the process of ripping over 1,200 cd's (owned) to FLAC format for a music jukebox and backing all that up doesn't seem cost effective..?

Looking for a suitable RAID controller

    The motherboard spec can be viewed here: http://www.abit.com.tw/page/en/motherboard/motherboard_detail.php?pMODEL_NAME=AW8-MAX&fMTYPE=LGA775 It offers the following PCI slots: * 1 x PCI-E X16 slot, 2 x PCI-E X1 slots * 2 x PCI slots

Looking for a suitable RAID controller

I recently assembled a new PC using an Abit AW8-MAX motherboard and am looking for a compatible RAID controller to run 4 x 400GB SATAII drives in a RAID5 config. Looking at the Adaptec, Promise and 3Com solutions all seem to support server boards rather than desktops. Any ideas ?

Very slow data transfers beetwen drives

I'll give your suggestion a go, but I think the most sensible answer is what you suggest - disable the on board controllers and get a 3ware controller(s) to handle all devices. One question though: does running all drives through a slot in PCI card reduce performance compared with the on-board...

Very slow data transfers beetwen drives

Thanks for referencing the article - it was the first thing I read and investigated before I made my initial post. SATA3 and 4 are treated as SCSI devices, however I'm not sure the SATA1 and 2 on the ICH5 are treated in the same manner. The more I work this through the more I'm convinced it is...
