I wonder if the the controller's onboard cache is changing the results of the software RAID.

Controllers (or their drivers) can make a bigger difference than the disks or the RAID levels themselves.... so while the data in this comparison may be valid, it is valid only for this setup and the results do not necessarily translate to a general hardware vs software comparison.

I'm glad to see that even Adaptec's SAS offerings seem to be capable of decent speeds as just this year I purchased a server with an Adaptec u320 SCSI RAID card that was only capable of 40MB/sec... I put in a spare u160 LSI MegaRAID and got double the performance (still controller limited).

I've always been under the impression that it's the controller's CPU and RAM configuration that limits the overall speed of the controller. It's pretty normal for me to be think "Why is this server so slow." and then open up that box and find a PERC card with an 80MHz CPU on it instead of, say, a 500MHz ARM or Xscale or something.
