Virtualize it. If you need a parallel or serial port, they can be passed through to the VM.

I've done it, but it was years ago and my memory is poor. IIRC, I didn't use a router at all, just a laptop joined to the hotspot and wired to the network with both NICs bridged. Let the hotspot handle DNS and DHCP.

Well, the engine turns off when the car door is opened (nothing to do with the garage door). But my car knows the frequencies for my garage doors and the gates at work; it can open them directly without a separate "clicker".
