Timing of building a new system

Honestly not something to worry about. From what I understand, HDMI has the DVI pinout spec in the cable. There is no tricky conversions or software, just moving pins to the different plug. So long as you intend to run resolutions below 1920x1080 I've done this dozens of times without issue.

I do want to buy a used car

The maintenance is still complimentary on my cars, but after that expires, were I to have it done at the dealership, I would be spending $500-$750 every 10k miles.

Timing of building a new system

I had a machine stall massively during startup, and disconnecting some USB peripherals sped it up dramatically. Reconnecting the same devices once the system was up worked great.

    America is ungovernable

I don't think so. I've started a few companies in my life, some of them grew considerably before being sold. At the moment I (mostly) work for someone else. I did stop working for myself because I didn't want to deal with stuff. Taxes, regulations, and government bureaucracy played no role...

    America is ungovernable

I think that is a very optimistic view, jtr. I believe most of the problems in that bottom 20% are cultural, with the biggest problem being massive family sizes. #1 cause there is religion, specifically Catholicism and Christianity. Studies have shown that people who are less in control of their...

I completely agree with you on what the problem is. The solution, however, is more elusive. I heard an interesting analysis of our unemployment system compared to those used elsewhere. It seems that the only systems that actually worked were ones where more carrots and more sticks were involved...

Market share is also required for their "walled garden" concept to work. If you lock everyone out but those that use large parts of your product ecosystem, it gets claustrophobic unless there are a lot of people on the inside.

I actually am in about the 6-7th percentile. I don't feel "rich", but that is mainly because many of my friends are in the 1%-0.1% range. The concept of wealth redistribution as a whole seems to be what this conversation is boiling down to. Should everyone be allowed to keep their own...

What does your cholesterol look like? Your blood pressure? I've done it (if by "nutritional supplements" you mean soda), and was as fine after as I was before. It's kind of like a diet, really. You become so sick of the food that you only eat enough to stave off hunger.

I'm not sure how you get the impression that I don't understand it. Those numbers look about right to me. If your computer needs to be load-tested, you can check out the US National Debt Clock webpage. Based on your numbers in post #168, doubling taxes on the bottom 50% of wage earners would...

    America is ungovernable

I don't see a difference in those two statements other than spin. If 10% of Americans make 90% of the money, taxing them 10% more allows you to cut the taxes of everyone else by 90% and keep revenues roughly equal. If that is the case, it is not possible that increasing taxes on the rich...

    America is ungovernable

I was able to manage it strictly by spending cuts, mainly to the military and entitlement programs. That doesn't mean that I don't think the wealthy should pay their share, or that tax loopholes and shelters should be plugged, just that that could lower everyone elses taxes considerably.

You're broadening the argument. Your original statement in this line was that taxing the rich more couldn't put a dent in the deficit. This is a simple math problem were one to have the numbers. You are now arguing fiscal policy, which is a much broader argument where you and I are more in...

It is steep because of the growth potential. If it wasn't for their anticipated expansion, I would stick a pair of 3TB drives in the CAD workstation in RAID-1 and call it the server. That would save them considerable money. It also doesn't seem like a whole lot for an office start up cost. I...

Very weak, Stereodude. It isn't simple. If we wanted to do simple, common sense math we could look at the income distribution and to the math ourselves. Of course, that doesn't work because many at the top hide their earning elsewhere. This is a complicated matter because those with interests...
