An interesting theory I heard the other day. We are all traveling at the speed of light all the time. Any velocity not consumed in the x-y-z axis are consumed as we pass through time. Therefore the faster we go in x-y-z (space) the slower we go through time.

I have a new need for headphones at my desk at home. I'm looking for the best true isolation I can find for under $500. I don't want to hear anything going on in the room (primarily my wife talking to my mother-in-law), and I don't want anyone in the room to hear what I am listening to...

None of the Scythe coolers since the Ninja has had the correct fin spacing. More than 2mm between fins allows very low pressure airflow to make it through. Surface area is not the problem.

The bank of offices where I am is on a single zone. It wraps a corner of the building, with my office in the sun (large windows) while the thermostat is on the shady side in the hallway. It is a LEED building, so the windows don't open and the thermostat cannot be bypassed.

That is a nice looking board. Not on Newegg yet, and I would need to wait for another HPC project to justify one. None of my clients have enough VM load to even use half that.

Too bad it doesn't pass on the control scheme as well. I'll end up getting an iThing for the car because it integrates with the steering wheel controls.

I've gotten all our vendors to commit to a timetable for a fully functional web-interface client that does not require .NET. I wish I had also specified no Flash, but HTML5 wasn't out yet. Some have betas or proof of concepts out now, one is in the "5 years out" camp and we may need to dump...

I think the proprietary software is the main hinge point. I'm doing my best to get our company off proprietary stuff and onto the web. Of course, once I succeed, I will be going to Linux and not Windows 8 ;)

Just. ;) We are having a heat wave here (27C), and the machine at work will be taking a break for a while.

I use Newegg to get the gear picked out; they have a fairly comprehensive selection, and their search tools are fantastic. Once I have the parts list, I look elsewhere. For the video card I'll probably go with the NVS, as Aero and whatever 8 has will likely use a bit of GPU power.

I actually resorted to known-good monitors connected to every port on the motherboard and any expansion cards just in case. I didn't see the maintenance pins on the board, but I'll try that tomorrow when I get back to work.

I should have mentioned I've tried different monitors and cables, using every combination I have. I can't swap back the other hard drive, but at the moment there is no hard drive connected at all. I reset the BIOS by removing the battery for 30 minutes with power disconnected. Just to confirm...

I have a little Intel BOXDH57JG system with onboard video. It starts up, give a beep, and the num/caps/scroll buttons remain responsive, but no video. I've tried both a AMD 5450 and a brand-new 6750, no video there, either. I've tried resetting the bios, and tested both the DVI and HDMI onboard...

That NVS 450 looks perfect. Low noise (fanless), lower power consumption. And the version with the DVI and other adapters is still under $500.

No gaming beyond Freecell. This will be a software development box with an army of VMs on it.

IIRC, by default it is a trial of the more advanced version. After you register your free version and type in one of those keys, it makes it the free forever version. I recommend doing that before creating any VMs that may have features that aren't supported in the free version.

That is good to hear. When I was there a decade ago it seemed that India was still struggling with what to do with itself; having tons of labor, a decent work ethic, and an internal hunger to better itself.
