    Even better audio from a laptop v. Audio-gd NFB-15.1 + Emotiva Pro Airmotiv 4

I don't know how to reference the volume level. The Windows volume level is at 20% and the knob on the speakers is turned up ~15 degrees from off; at about the 8:30 position. Turning it to 40% and the 9-o'clock makes all the difference.

    Even better audio from a laptop v. Audio-gd NFB-15.1 + Emotiva Pro Airmotiv 4

I currently have both at 0. From what I can see it looks like the LF goes to -2 or -4 only. I suppose I could set the HF to -2? I've upped the volume a bit, and since there is no sub, my neighbors still can't hear it. The speakers sound fantastic once the volume is a little higher.

    Even better audio from a laptop v. Audio-gd NFB-15.1 + Emotiva Pro Airmotiv 4

Got the Emotiva Airmotiv-4s this morning. Hooked them up to a Creative USB Sound Blaster HD I had kicking around and put them on some Auralex monitor stands that elevate them a bit and air them more towards my head. I don't know if near field are always this directionally sensitive, but it...

This is the thread for the discussion of interesting apps.

I'm looking for an app that will post my phone's location and path every minute or so on a Google maps page, primarily so my wife will know where I am when I go out for solo rides alone. I'm playing with life360, but it is too wholesome for me...all about children and sexual offenders and can't...

With 4 drives, if you want to focus on capacity with some redundancy RAID-5 is the way to go (3TB usable). If you want more speed and still redundancy you can go RAID-10 (2TB usable) If you just want speed you can go RAID-0 (4TB usable, if any drive dies you lose all your data)

Please continue to post, just understand that Merc and I consider the reviews on Newegg and the like completely without value. It isn't that they are occasionally right, or contain some kernel of truth, they are simply useless. I'm willing to bet that the bad pins referred to were user error...

SSDs - State of the Product?

If reliability is high on your list, I would put the Intel drives on top. For price reasons the 330, 320, and 520 in that order. Then the Samsung, then the Corsair, then the Kingston.

    Something Random

I'm on revision three already, and I haven't even presented it to the boss, much less HR. Fortunately legal won't have a chance to see it. I want to keep it to two pages of plain English, and that means no lawyers.

Merc got it in one. This is California; our building codes mostly prevent that kind of damage. And quakes happen often enough that things that aren't stable don't accumulate. Of course, I suspect a hurricane would mess us up pretty bad.

I'm tempted to relocate my entire equipment rack to the garage and just run conduit for DVI/USB/Audio to the desks.

    question OCZ Crapping Out

Meh, previous management took too short-term a view and dug themselves a hole. Not the end of the world, or even the company. The stock analyst the article talked to still has OCZ as a "hold" and not a "sell", meaning he thinks they took a bigger hit than they deserve.

You can't do that with snail mail spammers, why would they make it easier in the digital age? If they aren't going to get anything from you, they clearly don't care if they piss you off. IIRC, FB's policies and pages were so complex that there were some third-party tools for managing privacy...

My Toshiba laptop's HDD Protection program keeps getting disabled

Since the topic of the thread is "solved", we may as well keep talking about SSDs. When it comes to hard drive reliability, I'm quite confident that SSDs are "good enough". Here is my reasoning: 1. Regardless of drive, only a fool would not have a backup, so data retention is a non-issue. 2...

    Presenting "The Coffin"

    1. All my workstation drives are SSD now. 2. The chassis they sell has mounting points above the tank for drives 3. Despite legit concerns, there are people on the internet who have HDDs submerged for years without issue, and I didn't find anyone who did have an issue.

    Presenting "The Coffin"

My fundamental complaint with the noise profile of 1U servers is that they contain many, many small high-speed fans. If you could instead take a couple large (say, 1m) slow (600rpm) fans and duct that air into the front of it the server would be much quieter. Of course, the fan blades would need...

question PC may have died-need some feedback on MB/CPU/RAM

Short answer is no. Video memory and bandwidth are important on that kind of thing. Even the 4GB on my $1k+ GTX 690 is stressed @ 2560x1600. It will probably run, but why would you plan to not have the resolution and eye-candy turned up to the max? Simulations are the most rewarding (IMO) when...
