Except for the fact that the fueling stations made hydrogen on the spot, that'd make a lot of sense. Something about the danger of hydrogen pipelines all over the place versus just taping into the existing water and power infrastructure....

    Whither the JEDEC Standard Memory?

I've been looking at parts for a build, and found exactly one company making JEDEC standard 4GB DDR3 1333 sticks; they're non-existent at speeds above that, and the 2GB sticks are still hard to find. Everybody else guarantees the speed if you manually set the timings and over-volt, but the SPD...

Single or Dual Channel Memory on Mobile

The Intel chips do, so I presume that the laptop does, as well. Then again, going with one stick of the slower memory seems to cost the same as one stick of the faster. We're just paying for the higher density.

Single or Dual Channel Memory on Mobile

This was my theory, but, since I usually go with one DIMM so as to be able upgrade easier, I actually wanted to be sure that was the case.

    Real innovation

I recall that a few years ago, Iceland sunk a lot of time and money building hydrogen fueling stations all over the place. They use water and the abundant power from geothermal to split the hydrogen off and release oxygen. This begs the question, why didn't they just go with electric vehicles?

Single or Dual Channel Memory on Mobile

I'm spec'ing out a laptop for a customer. It's being expensed, and he has a nice budget; but it'll only be used for about three years, and there's little chance of an upgrade during that time period. So, whatever he gets now, he's stuck with for the duration. After spending time trying to...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Like EPA gas mileage estimates for hybrids, I'm starting to get the feeling that we don't know how to measure the performance of SSDs. In the real world, I don't think that there's going to be a lot of perceived performance difference in any of the current generation drives.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I was reading the other day that there are problems using benchmarking software on SandForce-based SSDs because: (1) they have no cache and therefore react different than cached controllers; and (2) they compress the data before write, so compressibility affects performance. From that, one...

    quik i7 and memory question.

Never had a problem; in fact, they seem to come back quite quick. Maybe they've caught on to your politics? I'm not really a fan, but I generally like OCZ products and support. Unfortunately, their memory offering has swung back from "tech geek" to "I heart RAID 0 boot drives."

90° SATA cables that go the other way?

I'm pretty sure that you didn't have to pay $700 for that. It looks like all Gigabyte boards are like that. Most others that I've looked at recently do, as well.

90° SATA cables that go the other way?

I question why one would want to use the angled side on the motherboard. Beyond blocking stuff, it seems it would make routing awkward.

Memory Node Interleaving - enable or disable?

You're confusing bank interleaving with node interleaving. You can bank interleave with NUMA (and that's a good thing), but node interleaving and NUMA *are* mutually exclusive.

Coming from you, I guess that says something. It seems like prices are so close together, it's not strictly necessary to distinctly differentiate.
  38. sechs

Memory Node Interleaving - enable or disable?

Uh, no. Being "uniform" has to do with access. If all memory has the same latency and bandwidth to all processors, then it is "uniform." At least until recently, most Intel systems had uniform memory because they only had one node (controller). Since AMD integrated the memory controller...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I'd actually be more interested in how it operates in every day use, especially in comparison to something like the original Vertex.
  40. sechs

Memory Node Interleaving - enable or disable?

If you have non-uniform memory, then NUMA is usually (but not always) the better choice. I'm not familiar with the the machine, but given that it's Intel, I'm sure that your memory is uniform.

    Silverstone Fortress FT02 Case

Well, to be more exact, they do come out the top, but there's a perforated cover that seems to do a pretty good job hiding that fact. There's a "hole" to allow you to route cables to the back of the case. One reviewer complained that there wasn't enough space under the cover for a video cable...

    Silverstone Fortress FT02 Case

Reading some reviews, it seems that one of the complaints is that long (i.e., old) optical drives tend to block the motherboard; particularly, when using the top bay, the last slot of a board may get covered. The general solution is to use one of the lower bays and work around any connectors...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I think that it does, at least technically. Although reviewers have given me the impression that the design and firmware for the Vertex 2 is more mature and, therefore, tends to perform better than one would expect, relative to the LE. Any comments on performance?
