    Storage curiosity: Write-Only media

There is no point in a product that is totally write-only. Why write, if it can never be read? There is no accountability if the logs can not ever be read. More likely, it just can't be read locally or requires special HW that is not readily avail.

I would have tried to update the BIOS (even if it is the same version), then reset the CMOS to default/optimize settings and modify from there before returning the MB. That being said, your way obviously works, if it is under warranty.

    Sandy Bridge problems

It seems as though SB motherboards are back in Newegg (B3 version chipsets) but in extremely limited supply. I tried building a new system and by the time I had all the parts accumulated in the shopping cart, the motherboards had sold out.

    Cool system build

Yes, but we really are talking 1-2 months till they are expected which isn't a long time. They were supposed to be out in March of 2011 but I anticipate that because of the problem with the Sandy Bridge chipsets they will be delayed a little longer. I think it would be worth the wait...

    Cool system build

I think if I could wait, I'd go for for the triple-channel Sandy Bridge motherboards with the hex-core sandy bridge i7 processors. It won't be any cheaper, but it will undoubtedly out perform the best of the current generation i7's by quite a ways.

Why is the site always slow?

Is this simply an indirect way of passing the hat to pay for the site? Is it that you are not interested in the job any longer and want someone else to take over?

    Bite me, WinSXS directory

You mentioned it, and I didn't know what the folder did so I researched it a bit. From what I can tell the folder is used to store all localized copies of any DLL. So every time a new install installs its own copy of a DLL (that is different than a standard Win7 DLL) that is where it will get...

Windows 7 SP 1 is out

I have a machine that steadfastly refuses to even download the update. It stops at 15% of the download (no more network activity) then just stops till an unknown error eventually pops up (after about 30-45 minutes of just sitting there). I'm tempted to DL the service pack and burn it onto a...

    Copyright

In my world view there is nothing on the internet that is private unless it is encrypted. If you put it out there, then someone can read it. It is no different than doing whatever in a public park where anyone can see what you are doing. If a cop see's you doing something illegal, then he/she...

    Something Random

I personally believe that unless you are buying a card specifically made by Nvidia or ATI, you can't blame the card failure against them. There are too many variables that the actual card manufacturer can mess-up. So I end up blaming the likes of MSI, or EVGA rather than Nvidia or ATI. There...

Get rid of server 2003 logged shutdown/restart

Microsoft has never allowed shutting down using the power switch. It has tolerated it because there is a group of the public that does that but really discouraged it because of drive caching. If you do that often enough then eventually every time you start up Windows is going to want to do a...

    question Larger TVs

    question Larger TVs

I have tried cheap Sony remotes before. There is a reason for their short warranties - the keys wear out quickly so the remote slowly becomes useless. In a low TV watching environment they will probably be fine but in a family where there is always someone watching TV they quickly become...

business cards? Best way to do?

I designed and print my own, but I tend to have a very small volume. If you need to create specialized graphics then you'll need a graphic designer that you can work with at a local level. If you have a relationship with a local printer then that may be the way to go. If you need volume at...

    Keyboards

I went to Frys today. They had a Lenovo on display and I really disliked the trackball. Stereodude is spot-on in his assessment. I then went through the various Fry's alternatives by having a salesman open up each one and plug it into a machine. I ended up buying the SMK-Link. I had to...

problem Computer crash when processing large amounts of data

My immediate reaction is that you've repeatedly installed the wrong chipset drivers into Windows. What happens if you boot to MS-DOS and transfer ton's of data to and from a pair of drives? Do you still get a reboot? If so, then it is HW and likely the MB or RAM with the PS as a remote third...

    Rain and flood

I would argue that causation is totally unimportant. What matters is not the cause but rather can anything be done about it. If there is a flash flood are you really going to get out of the way only if the event was caused from someone blowing up a dam but if it was caused by a rain storm...

    question Larger TVs

question Multiple servers booting from SAS

If you can't take ownership and can't delete but need to, then the best I've got is backup, format, restore (without those files).

    Taking ownership of files

Can you read them? If so, copy/move the files to a FAT drive. Then delete the originals. Now copy the copy's back and you should be able to do anything you want to the files. I've also used backup and restore (to a different drive) to strip the security info from files before.

    Sandy Bridge

Merc, you are really stretching credulity with this LGA-1155 is backwards compatible with LGA-1366 belief and that a LGA-1366 motherboard can be made backwards compatible with a LGA-1155 Sandy Bridge processor. Failing all else the two processors use totally different chipsets.

Rumor - 4TB hard drive from Hitachi

Because 3TB exceeds the capacity of LBA (logical block addressing) which maxes out at 2.1TB so the entire drive is not accessible. Also, the MBR (Master Boot Record) is also limited to 2.1TB preventing booting. Currently, unless you have a UEFI BIOS and a 64 bit OS that supports such 2.1+ TB...

I think that for notebooks these are really a good idea because they are small enough that a place can be found inside the case. The standard notebook HD can then just become a removable data drive.
