Hopefully we'll see some large capacity versions soon.

Interesting that the drives they mention to use 1TB/platters include capacities lower than 1TB.

They have to do something with the defective platters. :)
Yes, the return of the single head drive - the last one of those I remember was the Quantum Fireball 540MB.
So they're short-stroking a 500GB surface down to 250GB. The applications are all DVR, so it sounds like some OEMs are insisting on drive capacity being no more than 250 or 320GB. Part of a deal with the studios perhaps?
The 5400rpm models sound particularly impressive: 3W at idle, and a shattering operating temperature range of 0 to 75°C!

Yup. 75C sounds like a DVR application. Or maybe automotive.

Automotive guys will never go for something with a minimum operating temperature of 0C.

Honestly I hadn't even considered an operating enviroment below freezing. My outdoor gear has fans and heaters to maintain a decent temp range (0C-50C).

Wow, that is nuts. I'm certain the LCD displays can't work in those temps?

Wow, that is nuts. I'm certain the LCD displays can't work in those temps?Clusters are typically -40 to 85C rated applications. And yes, the LCDs work in those temps. They use wide temp LC fluids and polarizers.

They do work. Even when it's 0F (-17C) outside, it takes a little while for my LCD to brighten up in my car, but it does work.

And anti-freeze :-D

Amazing. I want a 5 platter drive before Hitachi is gone. :-D

I know it's cold when I drive into work and it takes my radio display a second to reflect station changes.
