Here is a thread for you guys to let me know if something is wrong on the new server.

Edit: Also let me know if things are good! :-)

Wow, pages load fast! :D
No problems for me using the old domain name.

Handruin
05-03-2009, 01:03 PM
I hope it continues this way. We might have some bugs to iron out, but we'll get there. I do apologize that it took me this long to get things done. I feel strongly that this server will do us much better than the old one.

Man...the speed is way faster. I should have moved us months ago...I feel bad you guys had to suffer with that old site for so long!

Yeah, this is much, much better. Way to go Doug!

Lol, Handy... u-da-man!:bravo:

It's more like going from a older browser, to say Safari 4.0 beta; it's a little faster, but not much can make a dialup connection seem faster---I'm still sufferin. Though I have had some d/l's on 10+MB files go 1.5-2x on some sites...still not fast enough to d/l any of Merc's fav vid. pr0n :( :p. You need a very fast connection to d/l some of those combo Mac OS X updates for Intel machines now, they're headed towards 1GB now.

Test will be if there are no more double posts...for those who are not inebriated :D

<edit>and it still takes about 2min from time I hit submit post button, leaving me less than 3min to do an edit, which as you know, is barely enough for those who are "Twitter Challenged" :p <edit>

Handruin
05-03-2009, 02:13 PM
Lunar might already be seeing some double post issues, but I've not seen any abnormal delays from the time I press submit to the time the post is entered into the forum. With the old server we would see 10+ seconds at times...here it's 1-2 seconds from post.

LunarMist
05-03-2009, 02:29 PM
I had that problem with the old host, not being patient enough to wait for anything to happen sometimes for 10-30 sec. after pressing the button.

Handruin
05-03-2009, 02:34 PM
Flood control is enabled for 5 seconds so if you get trigger happy during that time it should stop you. Hopefully we won't be seeing any more 30+ second posts. The servers are also on the west cost now (CA) so they may be closer to you.

Can you guys check something for me? What IP address do you resolve if you ping the following:

www.handruin.com
www.franticdownstream.com

For me, handruin.com resolves to the old IP (208.99.113.119). It should be resolving to (67.222.3.121).

I can't even get franticdownstream.com to ping anything which is odd.

Any thoughts why I'm getting some domains to resolve to the correct IP, and others still go to the old? Would DNS propagation really spread out like that for my ISP? Timwhit gave me the trick to do dnsflush on my machine but it hasn't helped.

DNS propogation is a lot like wireless, which is a lot like magic. There is a reason for everything going on, but there is no way to know enough about the situation to be able to explain why everything happens the way it does.

The last freakish DNS issue I had was that a local ISP had the idea that they were the authoritative DNS server for my domain. Anyone on their servers (or using their mail servers) didn't get to me until I sent them a nastygram.

udaman
05-04-2009, 11:10 PM
Didn't try to ping :p

www.handruin.com (http://www.handruin.com/) - 67.222.3.121
www.franticdownstream.com - 67.222.3.121
(http://www.franticdownstream.com/)

^^^implies both urls link to same address, which implies when you click on both you should get the same webpage?

I got Handy's blog on the 1st just 5min before I typed out this post,

got this message on the 2nd:

Yes, every website I host uses the same IP address. It's done through apache's name-based virtual hosts (http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/vhosts/) which is very common. That means you should not get the same web page when you visit via domain name.

Uh, so what just happened 15-30min ago when I couldn't get the site? clicked on browser history link for main index, browser came up with error message that site was not available?

Heh, site sure is fast now :D. Almost like having a slow DSL or cable connection. (will probably be a bit faster once I start up from my OS X 10.5.6 partition and use Safari Beta 4... woot! think of how many posts and long rants and edits I can do now...you've unleashed a Pandora's box :D)

Now if Handy can just get all the other sites running this fast... :(.

This is our new SF server that I have full control over:
root@host [~]# uptime
22:14:59 up 309 days, 22:46, 1 user, load average: 0.01, 0.02, 0.00

It's still possible the network could have gone down, but this hosting company is known to have very high uptime figures.

Well, every night on the old server I would try to load up the page at about 11pm central time and it would take 30-60 seconds to load. I think they did backups around that time. So, rather than posting anything, I was mainly waiting.

No, LM, you must have missed my rants. I have 56k dialup, I live in the devil's triangle of So. Cal. Million dollar homes, yet DSL can't work well, tremendous downtime on squirrel ravaged copper lines that from my location, go nearly 15k ft to the CO (central office of the telco). Ie. DSL blows at super slow speeds, cable not much better. I have a friend tired of waiting for Verizon to bring in FIOS, went with Time/Warner cable. Guess what, it's nearly as slow as a slow DSL connection, and he's paying $100/mo for the TV/internet package.

With the new server, I'm getting SF to load pages faster than just about any site I've ever been on (and as I've already said, I haven't even fired up my OSX 10.5.6 partion yet to run the faster Safari beta 4 browser...it's almost too fast already :p ), as fast as my friends cable connection on sites which are much slower than SF.

So why has the site been down for what 1 or 2 days now? I couldn't even get handruin dot com

Handy should update his twitter acct to let us know when something crashes, like servers being down. Meh, guess there is some utility in that silly social disease known as Twitter.

Lol, twitless, I clicked on the last link but found no mention of you. Why do you post up wasteful links like SD? :D

Just because both Handydot.com and SF are the *only* sites that return no access, the *only* sites out of dozens I surf on a daily basis, doesn't mean I'm having a "Mac" problem...try trolling someone else you guys, I'm not buying into your baiting tactics, lol. Even Effin twitter/handruin works just fine...you just don't have an answer, so the best you can do is ad hominem attacks, sad/pathetic.

I have no idea why you can't access the site. You might want to call your ISP and see what's up with the DNS. You should be able to get here via IP address until then.

Did all of the images below, using my 'normal' ISP... ucle.edu, while unable to access SF this morning (yesterday I could).

So decided to try something else, used a different dialup ISP, located in LA, but different area code, etc.

Same browser, same everything, did not even close and restart browser, everything is *identical* except using different ISP.

So why is this happening with ucla.edu and not other ISP's???

(timwitt ain't too bright, he could have just said "udaman, sorry I can't help, I have no idea why you can't access SF" even if he did suspect/could help...that way he'd have days on end without having to read any of my 'pointless' posts on SF, my inability to gain the secret code access to SF :p ...and likewise, my of his ignorant/trolling 'pointless' posts :D)

Handruin

I've removed all my old accounts on the old host, so if your ISP's DNS is not updating then you'll no longer be seeing the old website.

What IP address do you get when you ping storageforum.net? As you can see in the first screen capture (whois) the correct IP address is listed for our site. If you're not resolving that IP address, you'll need to call your ISP/help desk and ask them why DNS propagation has not occurred in over a week.

As a last suggestion, try configuring your own machine's network to point to a public DNS server (http://www.tech-faq.com/public-dns-servers.shtml).

I gave you all the information necessary to fix the issue. Change your hosts file, it takes 30 seconds.

If you're on OS X it's here: Mac OS X: /private/etc/hosts

uda, if you don't stop the insults, everyone will have you on ignore. It's uncalled for and won't help when you have something of merit to post.

As to your problem accessing SF, configure your machine to not use the obviously lacking DNS provided by your ISP. Use 4.4.4.2 through 4.4.4.4; Verizon's public DNS instead.
