Shortly before Christmas I found out I was accepted into a special training program that will allow me to combine my Internal Medicine Residency with a Fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases and 2 years of research time in my current lab, and all at my academic medical center of choice. I'm absolutely thrilled and relieved. Not only does this mean that I will become a cardiologist, but I'll be able to continue my training in a place I love, and will have research time built in to make it easier to launch an academic career. Unfortunately, this year the process was competitive, with twice as many applicants as slots, and they did not accept a friend of mine. But I'm excited to get to withdraw from the Cardiology Match, not have to worry about interviewing across the country, and begin making some firm long-term plans - both for my research and for my house! Through at least 2014 I'll be staying put.

So beers on everybody!

Congratulations!
When you work towards something important not only to you but eventually for others, it is a reward in itself to achieve it.
Be a better doctor and help a lot of people.

Congratulations man! You're kinda doing what I wanted to do at one point (but never had the discipline to). It's a lot of hard work. You should be very proud of your accomplishment! I'm very happy for you.
