You weren't aware that we're poisoning our environment?

That picture of the litter booms on the Los Angeles River just about sums up how great a job we've been doing.

I did not click on the link just in case it was something unpleasant.

I'd previously read the first two installments of that LA Times series. It's very thorough, and very frustrating.

Sechs: Sarcasm is all fine and dandy, and no, I'm neither retarded not living in an asylum. As Gilbo said, the articles are thorough, and while I'm fully aware that we're gang-raping the planet, I wasn't aware of the gory, sickening details. For instance, I wasn't aware of the problem off Australia's coast; because of its location, lower population density and more awareness of these kinds of issues, I would have thought Australia and its environs would still be in much better shape than the rest of the world.

Lunarmist: The link takes you to the Los Angeles Times. It's not only unpleasant, it's horrifying and shocking. But every thinking person should read the articles. That means most all the regulars here at SF.

Eric: Yes we'll all be dead eventually. And your point has been made before in LiamC's Terrestrial Engineering thread. (http://www.storageforum.net/forum/showthread.php?t=5720) You should revisit that thread.

I suppose if you'd actually known how bad it really was, you wouldn't have called it sarcasm. Your assumptions concerning the less exciting areas of Austalia's coast just shows how little the average person knows about what is going on.

I don't know, but I don't know for a very good reason.

I don't plan on doing anything about it.

This isn't about lack of knowledge, if the world continues to exist even approximatly as it does for my lifetime, I would be really suprised. I expect the world to be destroyed more and more at an increasing rate until humans are forced to live elsewhere; and if we lose that "space race", I expect us to become extinct.

But I believe this is inevitable. Greed, ignorance, corruption, and the existing momentum will make it so. Therefore I don't worry about it.

My sadness comes not from the fact that we might become extinct, but that we are making entire species of flora and fauna extinct first, and from ruining this planet beyond reasonable hopes of recovery.

And yes, that was a depressing read.
And no, I don't know what to do about it either.

I had a recent discussion with a friend who has about 9 months left to live (cancer). He's in his 40s, single, and middle-class. He's also the most relaxed and fun person to be around. He cashed in his retirement fund, quit his job, and is having a great time. He realises time is short, but rather than cry about it he's trying to get everything he wants out of the way while theres still time.

My (now dead) grandfather was told by a doctor (after quadruple-bypass surgery) that he couldn't have his favorite foods anymore or he would die. He laughed at the doctor, and had his favorite (pankakes, bacon, and eggs) every morning for another year and a half before something completely unrelated killed him.

I think people are far to tied to trying to make what they have last forever, rather than accept what is around them and try to make it better.

All of earth dying is like a tree falling in the woods; it can't be a tragedy if no one is there to notice.

Just food for thought.

(and no, not PUI...it's not 11AM yet)

Doug, I never realised that you were so self-centered. If you had a powdered wig, we might call you Madame de Pompadour.

While I'm sure that many of us here will not be passing our genes on to the next generation, I'd hate for them to say that our legacy was a pile of shit. Why? Do you know what leaves piles of shit? That's right: assholes.

Honestly, doing something is better than doing nothing. Reduce, reuse, recycle; use energy efficient appliances; etc. At least we can say that we tried. It's not perfect, but certainly far better than the other choice.

sechs,

Considering how self-centered I am, I have to assume that you were referring to me. I'm David, Doug is the incredibly nice guy that runs these forums.

And I do accept your judgement of me and my position. Furthermore as your assumptions are correct, your judgement doesn't matter that much to me. (Similar to religious people telling me I'm going to hell).

Now keep in mind I'm not an eco-terrorist; I recycle, I drive a 40MPG car, and none of my hobbies involve the consumption of fossil fuels (Sailing, Rock-Climbing, and Tango). So I'm not ending the earth, I just don't care about it.

My appologies for confusing someone who cares about someone other than himself with someone who does. It was an honest mistake.
