First moderation

This evening, the first editorial moderation (http://www.storageforum.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=6397#6397) was made on SF. In my heart, I'm not a censor, and I hate changing the words of other people.

James posted a direct link to a site that gave the appearance of being a warez site. This isn't a referendum on James. We like James. James is cool. But I felt the precedent of a link to a warez site probably shouldn't be ignored, even if that particular link was fairly inoffensive.

We *did* spend a nice long few weeks arguing about moderation and conditions associated with the activity. Direct links to warez were used as an example in our "reasons to moderate". James' site was removed from that, but seemed close enough to at least be in question.

I would like to know, personally, as a moderator, whether I'm in-line in editing a post of that sort.

Just looking for some feedback.

Also, Tannin's post a little lower on the page is questionable, too, but I'm reserving judgement on it since 1.) it isn't a clickable link and 2.) I'd like to make sure the right things have been done in this case.

So, here's the lesson: In keeping with our rules of conduct and moderator guidelines, if you're going to break rules, at least don't do it on our public forums. We have PM for that.

Since we are a public forum, I agree that posting a link to download illegal softwares copies is something that shouldn't be done. However, James obviously did post that link to help some of us and although the way wasn't appropriate, the intention was good. I hope he won't be pissed.

BTW Merc, I know you are porn-addicted, but did you really had to rename the link xxx.net? ;-)

Actually, Coug, I thought it would be the most evident sign that I modded; I litterally crossed it out. Maybe I should've used "t"s?

Also I resent the characterization as porn addicted. I enjoy it a lot. I'm knowledgable on the subject. I'm open about it and interested in it. I don't think that means I'm addicted. Besides, I think I discuss it with good taste and restraint.

Anyway, I'm glad James doesn't seem to have a problem with it (moderation, not porno. I have no idea at all about James' position on that subject).

As I said to Doug, if you knew me in person you'd know that I am about the most laid back, calm person you're likely to come across. I don't get mad, I get even. :mrgrn:

As I indicated at the time, it was sort of a test case to see what would happen. I'm immensely proud to have been the first to have been modded here! :)

Merc, you're going to have to calm down about this moderating thing. This will just have been the first of probably several "interventions" you'll have to do as a mod in the lifetime of this site. You were entirely correct in what you did, it's not the thin end of a censorship wedge, it's just removing some content we all agreed we didn't want. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. (And that's about as close to my views on porn you're going to get ;) ).

On a completely unrelated note, an Aussie Rules footy player was today suspended for 10 weeks for biting the testicle of an opponent on the sporting field. I'd like to see that with your girly American Rules!

What is it you Aussie chaps do on the football field again? I mean, the way things normally work, there needs to at least some sort of courtship period prior to any testicle-biting activities.
