...perhaps this verb has already been used in other articles as well, and I'm just late to the game.

The 1.13AGHz Pentium III saw itself vansmithed last month, and in June the same fate will occur to the 1.20GHz Pentium III.
Funny. Thanks for enlarge my vocabulary. Another expression that will value us interrogating glances from non-IT people.
