I read this book a long time ago and now I'm searching for the title. I know there are quite a few readers on the board.
All I can remember about the book is that the main character, a boy, makes a home out of a dead tree or stump.

I think I saw something like that in "Penthouse Letters volume 6"...
As it happens "stump" leads me to a tool that might help you a great deal:

I don't suppose you're thinking of "My Side of the Mountain" (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0141312424/qid=1100644222/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/002-1228343-8984808?v=glance&s=books&n=507846), by any chance?
Kid runs away from home, lives in a tree, becomes radical right-wing survivalist-type obvious Bush-administration parallel Hawk and Weasel sidekicks.
Or "The Giving Tree" (no tree-homes in that one, it's a very sad story in fact, but the tree is a character)

"The Stump" is a short story isn't it? :mrgrn:

I thought maybe you were talking about Charlie Chestnut but that was a squirrel.
