Yo-

I used that NTSwith proggy to convert the WinXP Pro install on my spare machine in the basement to Windows Whistler Server.

What cool things can I do with the machine now that it has the server version OS on it??

The switch program doesn't work. I've installed both and one of the differences is memory management. Open Regedit. Go to
'My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlS et\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

Look at 'LargeSystemCache. In the server builds I've installed this is set to "1" by default. In Pro or Workstation it is set to "0". If the switch program really worked, this would be changed to a "1". But when I tried it, my copy of Pro was still "0".

Changing this to a "1" should help performance some in Pro.

OK so maybe it isn't perfect...but what can I do anyway?

Not much.

Host more network and RAS connections. That's probably a "Yawn" for you.
Install software that only runs on "Server" NT (SMS etc). Again, yawn. Install gobs of RAM. Maybe this is useful. Probably it isn't.

The MP-tuned HAL is something you DON'T have, so despite having "server", you don't get one of the key benefits of Server. Since you don't have the installed binaries, you also lose things like most of the AD and Remote Install management utilities. Not things that a home user needs.

Probably the most practical use is the additional network connections. For a purpose-built machine, using a Pro/Server machine might be a good way to get a slimmed down setup.

In Win2K server, Terminal Server is installed. Its a limited license deal but can be used. If it is enabled with the 'switch' program, it is cool to play with it.

Yes, but does Clocker have the binaries to run terminal server? I don't think he does.

I'll use Yo anytime I choose to do so. I may be over 30 but I know when and where I can choose to use slang.

"You know what, Ed?"

"No Dave. What?"

"That kid Splash."

"Yeah?"

"He reminds me of your sister."

"My sister, Dave?"

"Yeah, your sister."

"And why's that, Dave?"

"Well, they've both been virgins twelve times over now."

"Hey! Who was that kid in the studio?"

"Looked like Tannin's little sister to me, Dave."

"Damn brat. If she's been posting under my handle again, she's in big damn trouble."

"Dave, cool it, OK? She's a nice kid, just a bit forgetfull at times."

"Aww hell, Ed, she should know better."

"Just do me one favour, Dave. Don't tell Tannin. He'd go ape."

"Oh OK. But if she ever does it again, she's grounded!"
