From what little I got in news coverage, it's like her lawers didn't even try that hard. 2 witnesses? Not putting Martha on the stand? Little quip as the closing statement?

I wonder if it will ever happen, but the thought of Martha doing time in prison is just too funny. I mean, can you imagine: the decor of those cells? The slop they call food? Her innate compulsion to redecorate and cook will either turn out really good or really ugly. Either way, stand-up comedians, talk show hosts, and SNL just got a month's worth of material.

I wonder how Martha will spruce up that drab orange jumpsuit?
As e_dawg said, the comedians will have a field day with this one. :mrgrn:

It sounds like there's no love lost here. Would you mind telling someone who has managed to evade the entire Martha phenomenon why she's no unloved?

Would you mind telling someone who has managed to evade the entire Martha phenomenon why she's no unloved? In that case it is likely that you missed the reference I used in the thread tiltle. If you have ever watched more then a couple of minutes of Martha on TV you will definitely at some point in time encounter her saying "and its a good thing".
As for no love lost, I'm completely indifferent towards her. From what I read, it would appear that she did envovle herself with insider trading and then blantly tried to impede the investigative processes. 12 jurors seemed to think so too. If that is the case, then she should be held accountable just like anyone else....unless your OJ, in which case if the glove doesn't fit, you have to acquit (so that he can go find the real killers who he apparently seems to think are hiding out on one of the Florida golf courses).
Martha's reputation does proceed her though - an anal perfectionist with a scathing tongue to those who dissapoint her expectations.

It kind of pisses me off that someone who is worth hundreds of millions of dollars might decide she needs to cheat to make/keep a lousy couple million.that she doesn't really need.
Martha Stewart is a "lifestyle" icon; her schtick is that she's some sort of ultra-high-end homemaking goddess. If you look into some of the things she demonstrates, either on her TV show or in her books or magazine, she's pretty much always dealing with things that no ordinary human being would have, or have time to do, and might not have any way get.
Put another way, she is queen of all WASPs. The stick up her ass has a stick up its ass, which has a metal rod anchored in 50 feet of solid concrete up its ass.
I saw Martha Stewart prison slash fiction for the first time like three months ago. That falls in the serious "Ew" category.

From the news I heard I was under the impression her illegal activites saved her $17,000 (yes, less than the cost of myc car)...truly a stupid move on her part.

If only Martha had waited out the weekend. (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/hp?s=IMCL&a=11&b=27&c=2001&d=11&e=31&f=2001&g=d)
Waksal starts selling his shares Wed Dec 26th, 2001 (http://www.sec.gov/news/press/2003-30.htm)
Martha sells 3,928 shares of ImClone on Thurs Dec 27, 2001. Lets say she got the closing price $58.30. Proceeds from sale of shares = $229,002.4
Imclone breaks news of FDA's decision on Fri Dec 28th. Lets say the annoucement came after the bell.
Had Martha waited out the weekend until Mon Dec 31st, and even at very worst sold her shares for the trading day's lowest price of $43.35, proceeds from sale of shares = 170,278.8
What miniscule percentage is 60K from her personal wealth? Better yet, pretend ImClone completely tanked. Now let me rephrase that: what miniscule percentage is 230K from her personal wealth?
Dumb Martha. Very dumb.

Price of trading your shares with your full service broker: Four hundred dollars.
Celebrating your coup over lunch at Delmonico's with your Broker: Three hundred and fifty dollars.
Cost of legal fees defending your self: Two hundred thousand dollars
Loss of company's net worth: One hundred and seventy-seven million dollars.
Cost of removing the crease from your state issued orange jumpsuit? Priceless

This is something I just don't understand. Leona Helmsley did something similar by putting personal expenses on her company's petty cash account, and ending up going to jail for it. I don't get why people who are worth many millions worry about a few thousand dollars. It's pocket change to them. Considering the consequences what they're doing is beyond stupid. :frusty:

I've heard this from numerous sources. This is not from personal experience, although it would be nice to personally test the theory someday. Here it is: The richer you are, the stingier & greedier you are.
We've all heard the one about Mr. Gates using coupons at the local ice cream store. This from the man who, it is said, makes money so fast it's not worth his time to bend over and pick up a freshly dropped $100 bill.
I think it is caused by an unhealthy obsession with material wealth.

I believe that like most people that become so wealthy they lose sight of reality when you have so much money that you can buy anything you wish then money becomes secondary and you must find another form of control such as believing that you are above the law all they are doing is giving themselves another reason to continue living I believe also that people like this that goes to excesses are only interested in power and a craving for confirmation they are the most successful.
Is she married?
I hear OJ is unattached right now.
Do I sense the start of a beautiful friemdship?
As I heard a juror from her trial say today, 'she's a smart woman that made a dumb mistake'. Indeed, from a business perspective, she has made some extremely smart decisions, but this ImClone one was very stupid, especially considering that she was a stockbroker and one time (after her modeling career).

A fact that is seriously damaging to her professions that she was unaware her actions were wrongful. Mens rea? What mens rea?

I don't think he would live very long and then she'd be back in court again. This court mumbo-jumbo for high profile people is ridiculous. They should bring them into the bar, and after a couple of pints, our own panel makes a decision. Either they're innocent and set free, or found guilty and put to hard physical labor for the remainder of their natural lives. Besides, we could use the help in the stock room and at the winery. You know how boring it is to hand turn thousands of bottles of wine during fermentation? Plus hand picking acres of grapes gets old after a while.
