I looking to add a cheap hard drive and throw a distro of slackware or some other linux distro and learn how to use that distro. Any suggestions?

if price is your main concern, I'd look into pricewatch.
If you care about performance and not price, I'd look at Storage Review's leaderboard.
If you care about both....then that's tricky.

I unfortunately don't have a current "favorite cheap HD".

WD600AB = $90. 60GB and pretty damn fast for a 5400rpm-class drive.
If nothing else a Maxtor DM40+ 20GB will run you a little over $70. I'd pay the $20 for 200% more space.

Big fan of the Samsung Spinpoint 5400 RPM drives here. Good seek performance, great price (quite often the cheapest of them all), and superb reliability.
These days, the only time I buy anything else is if Samsung are out of stock. (Or if I'm looking for a different type of drive, of course - A SCSI drive or a 7200 or whatever.)
